Bethel’s story highlights the importance of inclusivity and equal opportunities in STEM education. It sheds light on the struggles faced by many talented individuals in underserved communities, where financial constraints often hinder the pursuit of their passions. We need to break barriers that limit access to STEM. Empowering young minds like Bethel’s with resources and support that can unlock their potential to create life-changing solutions and build a community with access for all. We read in the news about unemployment and a loss of opportunities in South Africa. This could make a difference and provide our youth with employment opportunities. #coding #UnemployedYouth #changemakers #nonprofit #PBO https://lnkd.in/eefyey4F

What a journey we have been on to focus on diversity in #STEM! So much more work needs to be done... let's do this together! #stemforkids #stemeducation #education #diversityinstem #diversityandinclusion #educationforall
Wow... this was 7 years ago! A lot of progress has been made since then for diversity in #STEM workforce per the National Science Foundation (NSF) Diversity and STEM report. Our work continues to keep up the momentum at the grassroots level, the front-end of the talent pipeline (preK -8). https://lnkd.in/eARAwApr STEM For Kids #stemforkids #blackhistorymonth #diversityinstem

🚀 Today we're launching the latest phase of our Community Matters Fund to inspire the next generation of #STEM pioneers. 🔬 We're offering grants of up to £5,000 to support projects that will engage young people in activities related to #science #technology #engineering and #maths. 🌍 Charities and local groups can apply now for a share of our £250,000 #GridCommunityFund to help break down barriers for the STEM leaders of tomorrow and fill the 400,000 roles needed by 2050 to reach the UK's #netzero targets. 🤝 We're particularly keen to support projects that will benefit young people in economically disadvantaged communities and those who are marginalised or underrepresented within STEM. Successful projects will need to meet at least one of the following objectives: 💡 Open the eyes of a new generation to the exciting possibilities of career in STEM, for example, projects that bring the area to life in a lively and engaging way 💡 Inspire further confidence and widen the skills of those already interested in STEM, for example, through hands-on workshops and interactive experiments 💡 Break down barriers by creating access to tools, time and resources for those who may be unfamiliar with the potential of STEM, for instance, through after school coding clubs or access to 3D printers. 🔗 For more information about the fund, visit https://lnkd.in/dUYMckjj

This International Day of Women and Girls in Science, let's not only celebrate the incredible achievements of women in Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), but also focus on empowering the next generation to follow in their footsteps. At Ummulkheir Charity Foundation (UCF), we understand the crucial role early empowerment plays in shaping young girls' futures. That's why we're committed to a zero-tolerance approach to FGM and providing quality education to every girl in our care. However, the journey doesn't end there. Many of our girls in primary school still face challenges, including: Limited access to scholarships. Lack of learning materials. Difficulties accessing basic necessities like toiletries, hindering their ability to focus on their studies. This is where your partnership comes in! By supporting Ummulkheir Charity Foundation (UCF), you can help us: Break down barriers and empower girls to pursue their dreams in STEM. Provide scholarships that unlock access to higher education and specialized training. Equip them with the necessary learning materials to thrive in their studies. Ensure they have access to basic necessities so they can focus on learning without distractions. Together, we can create a future where girls in STEM not only exist, but thrive. #GirlsNeedRoleModels #WomenInSTEM #WomenInScienceDay #GirlsNeedRoleModels #WomenInSTEM #WomenInScienceDay

Thought provoking article that I think is worth contemplating. As an organization that primarily serves boys and young men (but working hard to get more girls and young woman in our STEM programs), how are we supporting young men and boys? Are programs that teach collaboration, teamwork, communication skills valued by philantrophy or is it just who we serve rather than the skills learned? "There are a lot of programs that do a really good job in high and middle schools of exposing girls to STEM professions, and there are basically none on the other side. That would be a really, really good thing to support. There’s some great scholarship programs for encouraging girls and women into STEM subjects. How about more scholarships to get men into K-12 teaching? Why not fund them alongside the work that you’re doing to get women into STEM?" https://lnkd.in/dbuVmrUJ

Over a decade ago, I began addressing the challenge of creating a more inclusive #STEM space. Reflecting on my own journey, I realised that positive early experiences led me to where I am. I wanted to create those same opportunities for other young people. If you know a young person (ages 5-25) looking to develop their #STEM skills over the summer, take a look at Stemettes’ free, fun, and food-filled events: https://lnkd.in/eyXRFj-S It's not about forcing everyone into STEM careers. It’s about ensuring everyone has basic tech literacy, to make informed decisions and participate in these 21st century conversations. #WomenInSTEM #STEMdiversity #STEMeducation

Programme Coordinator at Tech She Can | Data Coach | Data Science & Analysis | BSc Psychology | STEM Ambassador | Tech We Can Champion | Chess Geek
Some exciting news but first... When I transitioned into tech it was clear I was amongst the few - woman, Asian, and Muslim. Women make up less than 30% of the global tech workforce, the number is even smaller for minorities. Have you heard of Tech She Can? Tech She Can is a fantastic charity dedicated to inspiring and enabling all children, especially girls, to pursue careers in technology. They work closely with schools to integrate tech education into curriculums and provide free resources to make technology more accessible. The Tech She Can Champions are individuals or organisations that advocate for gender diversity in tech by promoting educational opportunities and serving as role models. I am so excited to share that I will be working on the Champions program as a Progamme Coordinator! Really excited to be apart of developing initiatives to engage and inspire the next generation of tech talent. To read more about Tech She Can and their amazing work, or to sign up to become a champion follow the link! https://lnkd.in/exiYXhUt. Please share the link to anyone who would like to sign up to become a Champion! #TechSheCan #STEMEducation #GenderDiversity #WomenInTech #FutureTechLeaders #TechForGood #InclusionInTech #InspireTheFuture #EducationMatters #DiversityInTech #TechCareers

Sharing this report on youth and STEM learning in afterschool.
Informal STEM Learning | Youth empowerment | Gender equity | Policy & Advocacy | Non-profit leadership | Philanthropy
I'm delighted to announce that our report "STEM and Community Engagement in the Afterschool Environment" is out! As you know from my posts on our Collective for Youth Empowerment in STEM & Society (CYESS) initiative, I am really interested in how we can shift the STEM narrative to expand beyond workforce preparation and include more teen voices in STEM-related discussions. We conducted this study to better understand the landscape of programming at the intersection of STEM, civic engagement, and teen leadership. Read the full report at https://lnkd.in/ed57Zx2C and the Executive Summary at https://lnkd.in/ejitSdqu One of the main questions we wanted to explore was whether there was any tension between STEM learning for workforce readiness and approaching STEM as a tool for community-oriented civic goals. And the answer is a clear no - findings actually indicate a trend towards using community engagement as the bridge that establishes STEM’s relevance and meaning for youth. Many programs were clear that their purpose for offering STEM engagement was not to view STEM as only a career pathway but also as a vehicle for nurturing young people into becoming citizens who positively contribute to their communities. This bolsters our belief at CYESS that not only do youth deserve a say in issues that affect them but when we empower them with STEM knowledge and invite them to the table, they will create innovative new solutions and be invested in improving the world around them – often beyond what adults can imagine. In a world driven by STEM fields, it is critical that we continue to make connections between young people’s interests and issues they care about and STEM. The knowledge and tools they gain will not only support their preparation for meaningful careers but also prepare them to lead civically engaged lives. And I think we can all agree that this would be a good thing for all of us! Read more about our work at https://lnkd.in/eiY5fXfU #CYESS #STEM #afterschool #civicengagement #youthempowerment
