You're technically capable, a 10/10, the smartest person in the room. But if your communication skills are a 3/10, how do you think people will perceive you? As a 10/10 or a 3/10? Our value is often judged by how well we can communicate. Improving your communication skills enhances your impact on your team and projects. Those who excel are not just technically proficient but also effective communicators who build strong relationships. They are the ones who progress a lot quicker than their peers. If I were a civil or structural engineer, this would be my focus.

Do we know what we’re doing? People outside the construction industry often ask me what I do as a structural engineer. My answer is always simple: I make sure buildings stand strong against the forces of nature. But when I ask a civil engineering graduate, “What do you think your job as a structural engineer actually is?” the answers are rarely clear. Here’s the truth: as a structural engineer, especially at the start of your career, focus on one key thing— Do the calculations to make sure Capacity > Force. Don’t overcomplicate it. Show the world that you can master one thing first, and build from there. Or reach out to me on Linkedin to learn how. Your destiny is in your own hand.
