- DURBUY - The Durbuy project embodies a major ecological ambition by using only 7% of the land for construction, leaving 93% of the site to become forest. This initiative aims to give the site a new biotic resilience and preserve biodiversity. The project team, composed of architects, stability experts, landscape architects, engineers and local partners, is working together to design exemplary housing on a 19.5-hectare site: 14 hectares devoted to revitalising a forest and 5.5 hectares for local agriculture, including orchards and livestock areas. The project's buildings are designed to be sustainable, with a demountable metal structure, low-CO2 concrete and an energy supply provided by more than 7,000 m² of photovoltaic panels, all in collaboration with local businesses. The project also incorporates biodiversity initiatives, ecological wastewater management, and a mobility strategy, with a central path and car parks integrated under the buildings to minimise visual impact. This housing project takes an important bet on the architecture field's position towards urban forests. In today’s landscape, specifying timber in a building project carries more risk due to supply uncertainty and price volatility. As a renewable, low-carbon, non-toxic and recyclable material, timber plays an important role in sustainable architecture. However, given recent shortages and price increases, the design and construction industry is starting to recognise that timber may be a finite resource if we do not learn how to use it more wisely. In a new White Paper from Crafted Hardwoods they discuss the current state of the timber market in Australia and explore how a pioneering technology that converts sustainably sourced, low-value pulp grade resources into premium hardwoods could be a viable solution to timber shortages.
