In university, "I was always taking first in my secondary school" doesn't matter. What matters is the strength of your foundation with respect to the courses that you're set to take. And trust me, university will test that foundational strength mercilessly. In that scenario, you're likely to see someone who took 10th in a more competent secondary school having an unbelievable edge over you whose secondary school had one teacher taking Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Geography. It is not your fault but then the brute reality is that his secondary school laid in him a far more rigorous foundation than yours did. That is a truth you must come to terms with and address as quickly as you can. Right from your first lecture, note your foundational gaps and set out to fill them up yourself before it gets late. Oh, you weren't taught that in secondary school but your lecturer assumes that you were? Take note of it and immediately after lectures, head to the library to fix that or ask that brilliant friend to put you through if he or she can. The earlier the better. Foundational gaps are potholes on the road academic excellence. If you don't fill them up quickly, they'll expand, and when they do, rest assured that you'll be in for a bumpy university ride. Want a smooth university ride? Fill the gaps. Got it?
