😎 One of the greatest joys of teaching is also one of its biggest challenges - not one single student is the same. It means there's an abundance of fresh ideas, perspectives that enter the classroom, and no single lesson plan will ever work out exactly the same way twice. However, within the confines of the current academic system it can be difficult to recognise and celebrate that variety and diversity of talent. But systems can be changed. Jos Zwanikken, one of our Education Fellows, is planning on doing exactly that. 🔀 During his Meet & Eat on June 18th, he will expand on his plans to build multiple learning tracks within single courses towards the same learning goals. If a course could offer a suitable ecosystem in which diverse talent can grow, it could raise the performance of the group overall, and enrich their learning outcomes. If we fail to do so, we run the risk of talented students still get left behind - just because of a disconnect with the material, methodology, or pre-existing biases. 💭 Jos has been experimenting himself with allowing students the choice of what they will be assessed on within his own Nanobiology courses, and he's ready to share his unexpected outcomes with you! When I visited VERSO International School last year and learned about their "exam-free" approach, along with fluid and dynamic learning spaces and timetables, I was impressed. They struck the right balance between "routine" and "freedom" in learning, a combination that I appreciated. Upon discovering that they use rubrics to translate students' work into values, I rejoiced. I love this concept hoping it gains acceptance in higher education institutes. These institutes should view each candidate as wholesome rather than focusing solely on grades, which only reflect a student's ability to memorize and regurgitate information onto paper. I am glad they did! In schools, students are often taught using old, didactic methods, emphasizing memorization of facts. Rarely do integrated teaching methods or contextualization take place. Suddenly, at the age of 14 or 15, students are required to make significant, life-changing decisions about which stream or subject to pursue for their future. This decision-making process occurs during adolescence, a time when there is a significant conflict between the limbic system (decision-making based on emotions) and the frontal cortex (decision-making based on reasons and judgments). How can we expect the student/teen to decide based on what they like theoretically with less hands-on exposure? Hence, it often leads to the limbic system dominating, creating Young Adults who are confused, full of regrets, and reconsidering career choices with pressure to pay the study loan! Numerous studies in adolescent psychology and education theories have been conducted, yet a reluctance to embrace change persists. Students should be exposed to various subjects and their real-world relevance. They should be instilled with values applicable to both personal and societal contexts, utilizing the reward system in their slowly maturing brains through real-world projects and problem-based learning. Students need the freedom to ask "WHY" questions and explore their curiosity. Mistakes should be viewed as opportunities for deeper learning, allowing them to rectify problems and build a foundation for constructive thinking and activities, redirecting the energy generated by hormones. Recognition of these initiatives in schools is crucial for higher education institutes, governing bodies allocating courses in higher education institutions, industries hiring fresh candidates, and, most importantly, PARENTS and TEACHERS so that we can avoid getting stuck at the famous question of “YES, all your innovative teaching is great but how will this translate into acceptance in university or securing a job?” Applause to Verso graduates admitted to these educational institutions. I extend my best wishes to upcoming students and hope more institutions will appreciate this positive change in education. I am glad that I will also be able to provide a somewhat similar experience to my students at STEAM Engine by embracing Tenby School Penang's STEAM 6.
