This week I've been attending the NECHE Annual Meeting. My thinking about higher education, inside and outside of New England, has been pushed over the last few days. One of my favorite sessions is the News Flash! Session with Inside Higher Ed's founder Scott Jaschik. Hearing him provide his annual Top 10 list of issues for higher education leaders to look out has proven to be prescient over the years. For those interested, here is his list from this year: 1. Israel/Hamas War. (N.B., he shared this before yesterday's hearing in Washington) 2. Many campuses will close in the next year. 3. Demise of Affirmative Action. 4. Legacy Admissions. 5. Decline in enrollment at Community Colleges 6. Student Debt. 7. Faculty morale. 8. Budget cuts. 9. Direct admissions. 10. President Trump. A current throughout each of these topics: a lack of trust in higher education. The challenge for leaders is to go beyond engendering trust in your own institution, but in the role that higher education can play nationally. Not on this year's list, AI. It will be interesting to see how these matters will play out over the next year, and how higher ed will respond to this charge to be transparent about its value proposition for society. #NECHE2023 #highereducation #topten https://lnkd.in/gQ-qMGXv

A number of Scottish higher education leaders have highlighted growing concern around the current university funding model in a new King's College London report on the future of the UK’s higher education sector. Our universities are key strategic assets which are vital to our economic growth and our international reputation, but they are coming under growing financial stress. Its vital that the we heed the warnings of Scottish higher education leaders and take action to put our universities on a more sustainable financial footing. Recap on the visit to Windsor earlier this week as a member of the learners’ council at The Foundation for Education Development 🤩 As a student, the opportunity to co-create significant and potentially transformative proposals with a group of experts, who possess decades more experience in the education industry than me, was both humbling and empowering. My team focused on imagining having a National Assembly for the future of UK’s education. Guided by the principles to: 📌Do no harm 📌Gather cross-stakeholder/ sectoral input 📌Co-creation by practice-based built-on design We envisioned a National Assembly that will: 🪄In the short-term: Establish an inclusive cross-stakeholder network to collect opinions from children/parents regardless of their backgrounds 🪄In the mid-term: Start to implicate intervention projects at several pilot locations across the nation, gather constructive feedbacks from these projects 🪄In the long-term: Refine the intervention ideas to better tailor to stakeholders’ needs, and start to establish nation-wide impacts While grasping every detail and the underlying rationales raised by colleagues during the consultation was a bit challenging for me, knowing my contribution was shaping the future of education in the UK filled me with a strong sense of efficacy leaving St. George’s House.
