New product: Astleys of London Stacked Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked Astleys was one of London’s most historic pipe and tobacco shops. Like many pipe tobacconists, its owners had pipes made specially to be sold under the shop’s name. Astleys pipes, however, were made by some of the premier pipe manufacturers and artisans in the UK, such as Dunhill, Charatan, Les Wood, and Ken Barnes and Barry Jones of James Upshall. As a result, Astleys pipes are prized for their quality, and as examples of the very finest British pipes. These days, unsmoked Astleys are so scarce they might as well be on the WWF endangered species list. And what an Astleys this one is! It’s an interesting hybrid of the cutty and the stack, with a light, slender, slightly curved frame, and marvelous flame grain rising up around its tall bowl. It’s certainly not a Dunhill shape, and not one I’ve seen from Ferndown, either, so I’m inclined to think this must have either been made in Charatan’s freehand workshop, or by Jones and Barnes at James Upshall. Either way, it’s a beaut. We’ve got an interview with the great Leslie Wood, of Ferndown, coming up on the main MBSD hub in the next few weeks. This particular Astleys happens to be one that he and Dolly Wood made for London’s Astleys tobacconist. As far as Les has told us, there really wasn’t any difference between pipes made under the Ferndown name and those made for Astleys. Instead, Paul Bentley, the owner of the Jermyn St premises, would simply visit Les and Dolly at their workshop every so often, inspect the pipes that had not yet been stamped with the Ferndown name, and claim the ones he liked the most for Astleys. This one, therefore, is the equivalent of an Lovat from the Ferndown Tudor Root series. New product: 2008 Dunhill Ruby Bark 5103 Sandblasted Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy. The successor to Dunhill’s Red Bark series, the Ruby Bark continued Dunhill’s use of a ruby red sandblast finish from the former with some additional design elements, lending it an extra air of distinction. The most obvious of these is the silver collar the Ruby Bark wears, but a more subtle addition is the highly traditional, beveled rim each features, reminiscent of a more classic mid-century style. This particular Ruby Bark is a group 5 size, so on the larger end of Dunhill’s typical output, with a ring grain sandblast so good I’m a little surprised that the stummel wasn’t reassigned to Dunhill’s dedicated Ring Grain series. I’m not complaining, however, as it might just look even better as a Ruby Bark. The condition is great. Some minor, inner rim darkening, but the pipe does not appear to have been smoked much by its single, previous owner, who sent it to us via our trade-in program.
