Power Cable Current Ratings - Groups of Cables in Air When cables are installed in groups in the air, the rating of the hottest cable will be lower than when the same cable is installed in isolation. This reduction is caused by mutual heating. Below is a list of the observations from the Figure: • • The effects of grouping in the air on current ratings depend on the cable diameter (De) ratio and the separation between circuits (e). • If the separation between groups exceeds the critical ratio of e/De, then the thermal proximity effects, which cause the de-rating of the circuits, can be neglected. NR Expert leads the Grid-Forming Technology Working Group On March 12th, the first online meeting of B4.101 "Industrial Implementation and Application of Grid-forming Energy Storage Systems (GFM ESS)", organized by Dr. Zhan Changjiang, Deputy Chief Engineer of NR Electric, was held by the Technical Committee on DC Systems and Power Electronics (B4) of the International Grid Commission (CIGRE). 38 representatives from 10 countries including China, UK, Germany, France, US, and Canada attended the meeting. At the meeting, Dr. Zhan introduced the background and technical goals of the B4.101 working group. The attending representatives warmly exchanged their understanding of GFM BESS technology and the carried-out technical work. They also discussed the outline of future technical report of the working group, guidelines and mechanisms of the group members, and future conference plan, forming a consensus for the formal implementation of subsequent work. NR Electric, as the Power Stability Expert, is the earliest and leading research institution in China to systematically study the application of GFM technology in BESS application. Long term service to the power system and profound understanding of the operating mechanism of the grid have made NR realize early on that BESS has the dual characteristics of flexible and controllable power supply and loads. With fast and accurate control, it can serve as an efficient and multi-dimensional regulatory support resource, playing an irreplaceable role in the stable operation of the future power system. In over a decade of BESS engineering practices, NR has gradually researched and clarified the essence of GFM BESS, and effectively verified the control function and parameter indicators in corresponding engineering practices. Starting from 2022, NR's GFM BESS technology has gained recognition widely and has begun large-scale application, which has been implemented and well proven in dozens of engineering projects. Based on the extensive mechanism research and engineering practice application of NR in GFM BESS, Dr. Zhan officially proposed the ideas and suggestions of the GFM BESS working group to the CIGRE B4 Technical Committee in September 2023, which was recognized and supported by the Chairman of the Technical Committee and representatives of national committees of various countries.
