StreetLink: A Lifeline for the Homeless this winter. StreetLink is a valuable tool that helps connect people experiencing homelessness with essential support services. By alerting local organizations like ours, it enables swift intervention and helps individuals get off the streets. StreetLink is an essential service in the winter months, as conditions get tougher for rough sleepers. However, it's important to understand that StreetLink is not an emergency service. While they receive a high volume of alerts, it may take a few days for outreach workers to reach someone sleeping rough. If you have concerns about someone's immediate safety, please contact emergency services. Despite these limitations, StreetLink plays a crucial role in helping people transition from the streets to stable housing. As the cost of living in Australia rises and the rental crisis becomes more severe, young people at risk of or experiencing homelessness need our attention more than ever. Every young person deserves a thriving future, including those who experience homelessness. In 1989, Brian Burdekin’s report Our Homeless Children reframed housing for young people as a human rights issue. Burdekin sought to ensure that Australian governments — and, by extension, our society — would take responsibility for the next generation. Over 30 years later, youth homelessness is still a very significant problem in Australia. More than 40,000 people aged 15 to 24 present alone for specialist homelessness services every year.2 Only 25 per cent of young people asking for medium-term support receive it, and just 4 per cent requesting long-term support are provided access. Youth Foyers provide more than a roof over a young person’s head. They integrate safe and stable housing for up to two years with support for education, employment, and life skills. These supports are place-based and work in partnership with the local community, including education providers, TAFE, and employers in the local job market. "The research on encampments is clear that, when they are stable, encampments offer a sense of belonging, friendship, and connection that can outweigh the support offered by the shelter systems. We're proud to be partnering with Centre for Homelessness Impact on a new approach to supporting those experiencing homelessness. 💡 We know that tailored, one-on-one support is the best way to help people secure stable jobs and housing. Through this partnership, we'll use a model of Individual Placement and Support (IPS) to guide individuals straight into paid work and help them sustain it long-term. 💛  It's the first time this approach has been applied to homelessness: and the lessons could transform the way we support those most in need. https://lnkd.in/eCCFC_Bs

Homelessness Week: Urgent Call for Change! Queensland is seeing a rise in families needing short-term emergency accommodation due to the shortage of affordable housing. This is a stark reminder of the need for action now. For families with young children, staying in a hotel or motel long-term presents challenges like: • Disrupted routines • Limited space • Lack of familiarity • Privacy issues • Restricted access to resources. The emotional impact on both parents and children can be significant. Community services play a crucial role in easing these transitions and providing stability. The issue of homelessness transcends mere lack of shelter, encompassing a complex interplay of social exclusionary factors that only exacerbate poverty, limit opportunities and create barriers to full participation in society. Effectively addressing homelessness demands more than short term fixes. It requires holistic solutions that go beyond housing to facilitate meaningful societal integration that break the cycle of housing instability permanently.

Well worth taking a look and signing up. https://lnkd.in/dv7jpqDg As a freelancer, I was very lucky to work alongside Tracy Collier with Vicky Richards and her team at Crisis to write the Crisis Best Practice Guide for Employers. Even if I do say so myself, it's a great guide! It has really practical advice on how to support or prevent employees from being pressured into experiencing homelessness and clearly demonstrates how employers and colleagues can fight homelessness from within our day job. There are some really simple steps companies can take that cost nothing and impact massively. Crucially, it is only available if your organisation signs up to the covenant...so an incentive to get involved!
