Today marks an important day, not just for the LGBTQIA+ community, but for humanity as a whole. May 17th is recognized as the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) as on this day in 1990 the World Health Organisation (WHO) removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. Although we have made much progress, we face significant setbacks too. Currently, 62 UN member states criminalise consensual same-sex relations, either by law or in practice. At least 59 countries have restrictions on freedom of expression related to sexual and gender diversity issues, and in the past two years there has been an acceleration in the enacting and debating of such provisions. We have a long way to go. The theme of IDAHOBIT 2024 is a call for solidarity, and for everybody to unite in creating a world with social justice, where no one is left behind. MAY 17: 🌍 International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) 🌈🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️⚧️ On May 17th, we mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT), commemorating the World Health Organisation's historic decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. This year’s theme, “No one left behind: equality, freedom, and justice for all,” is especially poignant amidst a global pushback against rights and democracy. It is shocking to see that some of the world is still jailing, punishing and even worse killing people for their sexuality or gender identity! I was heavily bullied throughout my childhood and into my early twenties, and even recently got called “a faggot” on my walk home from work! We still have a way to go for true equality, let’s keep marking this day to raise awareness and keep the conversation alive. IDAHOBIT is celebrated in over 60 countries, with initiatives raising awareness about the discrimination and violence faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals. According to the ILGA World Database: 62 UN member States criminalize consensual same-sex relations. 59 countries have restrictions on freedom of expression related to sexual and gender diversity. Only 59 UN member States protect against hate crimes based on sexual orientation, 38 on gender identity, 9 on gender expression, and 5 on sex characteristics. Despite these challenges, there is progress: 16 UN member States have banned ‘conversion therapies’. 9 have restrictions on unnecessary interventions for intersex youth. 17 allow for legal gender recognition based on self-determination. 35 have legalized marriage equality. This day is a call for unity and solidarity. Let's strive for a world where everyone is valued and respected, with equality, freedom, and justice for all. Let's ensure that no one is left behind. This year's International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia carries the theme: "No one left behind: Equality, freedom, and justice for all." While notable progress has been made in securing the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual individuals, significant challenges persist. Discrimination and stigma continue to perpetuate severe health disparities and other forms of inequality. Many countries enforce laws that criminalize consensual same-sex relationships, and in certain areas, LGBTQIA+ individuals face the death penalty due to their identity, which greatly increases their vulnerability to human rights abuses and limits their access to healthcare services. Moreover, numerous political leaders contribute to these issues through divisive policies and detrimental rhetoric. As a result, LGBTQIA+ people are more prone to experiencing poverty, violence, and various other types of exclusion. Yet, amidst these adversities, the global community's resolve strengthens. Each act of solidarity, every legal victory, and all instances of public support fuel the journey toward true equality. As awareness spreads and allies multiply, the future brightens with hope. Together, we continue to strive for a world where freedom, justice, and equality are unconditionally available to all, echoing the essence of this year’s theme, leaving no one behind. #thisispublichealth #lgbtqiaplus #LGBTQHealth #lgbtqrights

Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia or IDAHOBIT. The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia was created in 2004 to draw attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex people, and all of those with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics. The day is an important reminder of how much there is still to do for the LGBTQIA+ community. We need to stand together and it is only together we can break down bias and prejudice, and create a safe and respectful world for everyone, including people of diverse gender identities, gender expressions, sexual orientation etc. The theme for this year is "No one left behind: equality, freedom and justice for all"  and this theme will allow for advocacy and celebrations in many forms - be it from human rights defenders, LGBTQIA+ civil society groups, millions of people in our communities, and our allies. #idahobit #lgbtqia #diversity

According to a 2023 global survey by the Pew Research Center, 67% of people across 27 countries say homosexuality should be accepted by society. However, the same survey found that 1 in 4 LGBTIQ+ individuals have faced harassment or violence due to their identity. At UPEACE, we reaffirm our steadfast commitment to inclusion and human rights. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐆𝐁𝐓𝐐+ 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲?   👉 1967: Sex between two men over 21 and 'in private' was decriminalized.   BUT gay sex remained illegal in Scotland and Northern Ireland until 1982 as well as those serving in the armed forces, 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧'𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟎!   👉 1972: The first Pride march was held in London, where 2000 participants supported and contributed.   Today, however, this number rises to up to a million, where various Pride events occur throughout the year and across the UK.   👉 1988: Margaret Thatcher introduced Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988. This banned the 'promotion' of homosexuality by local authorities and in British schools.   👉 1992: The World Health Organization declassified same-sex attraction as a mental illness. 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝟑𝟏 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐠𝐨.   👉 2000: The ban on gay and bisexual people serving in the armed forces was lifted. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝟐𝟒 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐠𝐨!!   👉 2002: Same sex couples were given equal rights when it came to adoption.   👉 2004: The Civil Partnership Act passed and The Gender Recognition Act passed.   👉 2013: The Marriage (Same-sex couples) Act was passed, legalizing same-sex marriages. It's clear that we've come a long way, yet the timeline also highlights that progress is an ongoing effort.    𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐲𝐞𝐭. Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (#IDAHOBIT). I believe it's crucial to ensure all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, receive inclusive and affirming support. In light of the decision to ban the teaching of gender identity in sex education, this year's theme of "No one left behind: equality, freedom and justice for all" is more relevant than ever. Excluding these topics from education can have a negative impact on LGBTQ+ youth, hindering their understanding of themselves and their identities. Let's work towards a more inclusive educational system that fosters acceptance and respect for all. Let us, as the Queer community, lead by example by showing compassion and unity towards each other, and demonstrate to society the respect we deserve. We can all be allies by promoting understanding and challenging discrimination. Today is #IDAHOBIT - the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia - a good day to ask if your projects reflect the diversity that exists in the community. If your project focuses on women, does it include women in all their diversity (e.g. trans, lesbian and bisexual women), If your project focuses on men, does it include trans men, bisexual men, gay men, and MSM? Does your project include diverse SOGIESC young people? Non-binary folks? What about asexual and intersex folks? If not, why not?
