We are lucky to live in (comparatively) close proximity to Central Otago, affording us the privilege of knowing winemakers, winegrowers and experts in the region, which has fruitfully provided us with the newest addition to our Dhall & Nash stable, Grasshopper Rock. Learn about the wine that Bob Campbell MW is calling "One of Central Otago’s most consistently top pinot noirs," here on our introductory blog; https://lnkd.in/gS9pGdb7

When I talk to California winemakers, I regularly hear them talk about Vermentino as the grape everyone should be planting. Vermentino, Vermentino, Vermentino. Why? Because Vermentino is a grape that likes heat and can therefore successfully be grown in many places, especially with climate change. Vermentino can be both oaked and unoaked. Vermentino can produce a rich, full-bodied wine or a crisp, mineral-driven wine. It can be blended with other grapes or made as a single varietal wine. These are the reasons why many California winemakers like Vermentino, although there are only 100 acres planted in California. In Paso Robles, Giornata produces Vermentino and this week the Giornata 2022 Vermentino, Paso Robles is the Please The Palate wine of the week. https://lnkd.in/gw2nWgdQ

Vineyard Update: Harvest has been adjusted to 14 Sep. Historically the person who both managed the vineyard and made the wine was called the “vigneron”. In modern commercial winemaking the tasks are often divided between vintner (or winemaker) and vineyard manager or (grape grower). Large wineries may have a wine maker and estate vineyard(s) in the care of a vineyard manager, while smaller wineries might have a vigneron or a vintner and purchase grapes from local vineyards managed by an independent grape grower(s). Feisty Fox Farm and Vineyards provides Vidal Blanc grapes to winemakers (vintners) who use our grapes for their needs. In this arrangement it is important to stay in close communication with the vintner to ensure the grapes are suited for the vintner’s needs. Weather, quality of the grapes and different uses or styles of wine will dictate harvest decisions. Clarification: Yeast is a type of fungus, not a fungicide. It can be affected by a fungicide. #vidalblanc #virginiavineyards #virginiawine #knowyourwine Toni Stinson Josh Stinson

May is Oregon Wine Month and Oregon is home to 23 federally recognized American Viticulture Areas (AVAs). The Willamette Valley, Oregon’s oldest wine region, has two-thirds of the state’s wineries and vineyards and is home to more than 700 wineries. . The Rogue Valley is a sun-drenched, fertile region comprised of three distinct valleys with progressively warmer micro-climates and the region successfully grows both cool- and warm-climate varieties so you can enjoy Rogue Valley wine with everything. . The Walla Walla Valley AVA straddles southeast Washington and northeast Oregon and is hemmed in by the Blue Mountains to the southeast, the Palouse to the north, and the Columbia River westward. . The Umpqua Valley is a result of the collision of three mountain ranges of varying age and structure: the Klamath Mountains, the Coast Range and the Cascades. . The last major region is the Columbia Gorge -- a place of extremes—extremes in climate, scenery, and style of wine. Let's discuss the grape varieties: ' Pinot Noir: Most commonly found in the Willamette Valley and Southern Oregon, Pinot noir represents 59% of Oregon’s planted acres. . Pinot Gris: Most commonly found in the Willamette Valley and Southern Oregon, Pinot gris represents 14% of Oregon’s planted acres. . Chardonnay: Most commonly found in the Willamette Valley and Rogue Valley, Chardonnay represents 7% of Oregon’s planted acres. . Syrah: Most commonly found in the Columbia Valley, Southern Oregon, and Snake River Valley, Syrah represents 4% of Oregon’s planted acres. . Cabernet Sauvignon: Most commonly found in the Columbia Valley, Rogue Valley, and Snake River Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon represents 4% of Oregon’s planted acres. . Riesling: Most commonly found in the Willamette Valley, Columbia Valley, Rogue Valley, and Snake River Valley, Riesling represents 1% of Oregon’s planted acres. . @oregonwineboard @orwinegrowersassociation @wvwines @yamhillcarlton @dundeehills @atozwineworks @adelsheim @youngberg_hill @troonwines @leftcoastwine

A “Cru” is a French term that describes “a vineyard or group of vineyards, especially one of recognized quality.” The term “Grand Cru,” which means “great growth,” is used for the highest classification for vineyards and wineries. In Burgundy, France, which is 200 miles in length, there are 33 Grand Cru vineyards. When names such as La Romanée, La Tâche, Clos de Vougeot, Corton-Charlemagne, Montrachet, Romanée-Conti, and others are spoken, people sit up straight and eyebrows are raised. There is prestige to wines that hold these names, and the Grand Cru title gives it even more power. But what if we say Sanford & Benedict, Bien Nacido, Rosemary’s Vineyard, Pisoni, or Mount Eden? Or what about Hyde, Gaps’ Crown, Meredith Estate, Savoy, or Red Car? Some of these vineyards are heritage sites. Many wines from these vineyards have received high ratings. Most of these vineyards sell fruit to other wineries that proudly display the vineyard on the label. These are what Master Sommelier David Glancy of the San Francisco Wine School called “The New ‘Grand Cru’ of California.” Check out these 10 “Grand Cru” Pinot Noir Vineyards In California. https://lnkd.in/gBeQYR9q

Why are field blends important to our 'pre-industrial' #winemaking approach? Field-blend vineyards are planted to not just one varietal, but multiple. Take the Pagani Ranch for example. You'll have #zinfandel vines next to #petitesirah vines and so on. These grapes are then picked together, brought to the winery, and fermented together. We believe the #wine starts in the #vineyard and that minimal intervention is needed from the winemaker. With this simple and perfected approach, a wonderful kind of consistency is achieved. How can these interplanted varietals possibly be ripe at the same time? "There was a method to the madness," says Head Winemaker John Olney. Watch our video "The Art of Field Blends" to hear John explain the science behind #fieldblend wines: https://lnkd.in/gPt49hiK #RidgeVineyards #farming #preindustrial #oldvines #zinfandel #sonomawine #vine #grapes #harvest #fallwine
