The volume of inbound cargo at the main container ports in the United States is expected to remain above 2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) during the summer and early fall, highlighting the strength of the US economy and the container shipping market. According to the Hackett Associates report produced for the NRF, US ports handled 1.93 million TEUs in March, a slight decrease compared to February, but an increase of 18.7% compared to March 2023. The forecast for May is 2.06 million TEU, tying last October for the highest level since August 2022. The report also predicts that the first half of 2024 will total 11.9 million TEU, an increase of 13% compared to the same period in 2023. In the first two months of the 2024-25 fiscal year, cargo handled at India’s major ports surged by 4.03 percent Y-o-Y, reaching 139.3 MT, according to provisional and advance estimates from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways. The month of May saw a particularly strong performance, with a 6 percent increase in cargo handling to 72 MT, driven by a 7.3 percent rise in overseas cargo, despite ongoing global supply chain constraints. It's unclear who started this rumor, but I've been consistently questioned about it by various portals and trade journals over the past week. Beyond the issue of empty containers, the primary concerns for shipments from Indian ports to Europe, Mediterranean and North America are escalating freight rates and schedule reliability. I concur with FIEO's observation that export orders have declined for shipments passing through the Red Sea.
