In the years gone by, India was defined by its religious and cultural strengths, but it has now taken Prime Minister Modi, with a new initiative, to give a boost to India-Caribbean ties through a purely development agenda. It is hoped that CARICOM would set up the mechanisms to get this agenda going. Is it that India is now showing its readiness to take on American and Chinese frontiers aimed at becoming a leader of the Global South if not a world power?

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expresses deep concern over the recent vandalism of Hindu temples in Canada, highlighting the strain on Indo-Canadian relations. Tensions escalated after the expulsion of Indian diplomats, as Canada alleges India’s involvement in a Sikh separatist leader’s death. Both countries deny accusations, intensifying friction between Sikh separatists and Indian representatives. When the US was forced to back down, and what this says about the New India. Between late 2013 and early 2014, the US and India were in a standoff over the indictment and strip searching of diplomat Devyani Khobragade. The US backed down after India ratcheted up the pressure. The lessons from there: 1. New India goes beyond the BJP. The Indian PM at the time of the Khobragade incident was the mild Dr. Manmohan Singh, from the Congress Party. 2. The Indian play was a textbook case of 'intelligent' power. There is a need to go beyond Eurocentric notions of Wereld- Macht- and Real- in such contexts. Bismarck and Machiavelli will soon have to accommodate Chanakya - and it would do good to study what William Jones had to say about both. 3. Part of the push on Khobragade came from the Manhattan District Attorney, an ambitious Indian-American called Preet Bharara. Expect more such eruptions as Indian-American agendas confuse those of the US and India. 4. Justin Trudeau and Canada would do well to study the Khobragade incident. Beyond Jagmeet Singh and Khalistan, there are many more parallels.
