On his first visit as Health and Social Care Secretary, Wes Streeting reiterated his commitment to bring back the family doctor. He visited Abbey Medical Centre GP practice with NHS England Chief Executive Amanda Pritchard and spoke to staff and patients to hear their views. He also committed to increasing the proportion of NHS resources going to primary care to ensure patients can get through the front door of the NHS and access the care they need.

It is good to have the family doctor or GP & have a fully funded & effective & efficient AE & Hospital system with well payed & highly trained nursing staff & doctors & consultants & paramedics & a well funded social care & a well trained & resourced long term system long term locally & regionally & nationally & prevention is better than cure & also health & nutrition & mental health fully funded & costed long term as it is cheaper to eat a healthy balanced diet nutritionally than send someone to their GP or family doctor & prescribe pharmaceutical drugs just to make a profit & not cure the root cause or the aliment or the disease or the illness & prevention is better than cure provided you know what you are really healing at the root cause & I look forward to seeing a long term effective & efficient long term & realistic plan or vision with the NHS here in the UK run for the benefit of all the populous of the UK & good effective & efficient long term realistic health care policies that make the NHS run better & more effectively & efficiently & to benefit all in the nations of the UK free at the point of use for all citizens of the UK! I look forward to seeing a better run NHS to benefit all the citizens of the UK !

Having not managed to get an appointment with my GP a couple of weeks ago I paid £95 to get a private GP appt instead. I still had to wait over one week, but then I got a 30 minute (actually it was longer) appointment with a fantastic GP who had the time to listen and fully consider treatment options. She then personally escorted me to the phlebotomist and I had my bloods done straight away. The next working day she messaged me the results. There was also a chemist onsite, so I walked out of the facility with my medicines too. I’m lucky that I can afford to pay, but it was all very efficient and whilst I expect the medical advice would have been the same it was the organisation that stood out as being much more patient focussed.

The money to fund this is already there - please just pass on the ARRS funding to GP practices directly to spend on staff as they see fit. The GP practices know how to best allocate resources to deal with patient demand, and this also avoids adding another level of admin, which just eats into the funding.

Let's bring back the family doctor and make sure in doing so we place pharmacists in pharmacies and ensure the bread and butter of what primary care provides is covered - first and foremost.

Long term, this is a sensible idea. However, it remains that there is a bottleneck at the front door, another bottleneck at the back door, and thousands of patients long overdue their cancer and routine treatments. These patients cannot be left to languish while primary care pressure alone is addressed.
