Today is #WorldStrokeDay In August 2020, having just turned 34, I was at work, reporting as usual, when I went to move the mouse—and my arm didn’t respond. For about 45 seconds, I lost control of my right arm. Soon after, my vision in my right eye began to blur, and I felt an altered sensation in my right arm. I was in a room surrounded by highly trained radiologist colleagues, yet I didn’t say a word—looking back, I’m not sure I could have spoken even if I’d tried. A&E initially dismissed my symptoms as an atypical migraine, considering my age. But, working in radiology and knowing the risks, I advocated for an MRI, which ultimately revealed a left parietal infarct—a stroke. This discovery led to the diagnosis (and closure) of an undiagnosed PFO (a small hole in my heart). I was incredibly fortunate. Yet, even today, I continue to experience residual effects: difficulty finding words, light-triggered migraines, issues with grip, and a constant awareness of every unfamiliar sensation. A relatively minor stroke has had a lasting impact on my life. One in four strokes occurs in people of working age. It’s crucial that we recognize symptoms and not let age lead to dismissal. Even minor strokes can have a profound effect on the person behind the diagnosis. #WorldStrokeDay
