I usually don’t talk much about my own achievements, but it’s Friday, and I thought it would be worth sharing a bit about what it’s been like to work in Marketing and Events at International Tampere for over a year now… 🌟 Here are a few highlights: -In the summer of 2023, I was directly involved in developing the International House Tampere website. -I’ve had multiple chances to have some fun and enjoy a few minutes of fame here and there in Tampere city promotional content like videos and social media posts! -This spring, I had the pleasure of designing and implementing both national and international campaigns for major events: -Experience Tampere 2024, alongside my colleague Karen Ahtiainen -Job Fair Tampere Spring 2024 Both were successful events that got millions of views and international recognition! -Fun fact: At summits and expos abroad, where Finland (and Tampere) has been represented, my colleagues have been approached by people asking about Tampere after seeing our ads! -It feels like there has been a positive impact in putting Tampere on the map, but we still occasionally hear, “I didn’t know about Tampere City before.” -Our team in many ways feels like a close-knit family, where we all support and help each other! Some challenges: -I need to improve my Finnish skills. -Public speaking has been a challenge for me. Some points to be grateful for: -This workplace has provided a safe and supportive environment for me to develop my skills. Lastly, I believe these milestones wouldn’t have been reached without my wonderful colleagues, teamwork, excellent team leaders and management, and the incredible marketing efforts from previous years! I’m excited about what’s to come, especially now that I’m working alongside my Marketing colleague Mirella Mellonmaa. I know great things are ahead at International Tampere! 📸 Picture of usual me at the office pretending to be on the phone, picture taken by Ella Tuikka, thanks Ella! #Marketing #ProfessionalGrowth #Tampere #Finland

Met Office Ambassador Antics I had a great morning inspiring students at All Saints Academy Plymouth Careers Fair last January, giving advice and freebies for the student (branded pens and squashy stress turbines). As a single parent, and 50:50 Operational Meteorologist shift worker and Learning Consultant, it can be tricky to find time to volunteer for anything, let alone run my own life! Fortunately, I was able to find a free morning where I was able to squeeze in this opportunity! Who else was there? There were 42 other exhibitors. These included several academic sixth form colleges; Navy, Army, Air Force, Babcock, Princess Yachts, Trowers & Hamlins, Cheynes Hair and Beauty, and Willmott Dixon among the exhibitors. This is apparently one of the best organised and largest school careers fairs in the southwest. My Met Office stall was situated between Plymouth Citybus and the Ministry of Justice UK… what a team we made! How was it? Now let’s be honest, most of the students were after the freebies. I had seven branded squashy stress wind turbines and thirty pens, of which the Year 8's made very short work! There were around a dozen students who kept coming back, to ask about opportunities at Met Office, many were girls with a passion for engineering. Career journeys can start as young as age 13-18 Work Experience with the option to apply for Apprenticeships from age 16. There were some awkward moments which I managed to style out… I'd have some interested students come over, I'd enthusiastically launch into the wide range of careers in the Met Office in the UK and around the world… and they'd tell me they were interested in hair styling and sports science. They were a slightly harder sell, but still took a leaflet! The Met Office plans to do fewer Careers Fairs, as these more time and resource for the engagement received. Those that we do attend will involve new Education Outreach Ambassadors buddied up with those who are more experienced as, although they are of limited impact for students, they offer a great opportunity for new ambassadors to gain confidence and understand the schools’ audience better. What does the future of engagement look like? Working closely with a group of partner schools and colleges, the Education Outreach team is developing opportunities for ambassadors to link up virtually with schools and academies. This means we will be able to do shorter, more meaningful "guest spots" which reach more students, have greater impact, involve no travelling, make more efficient use of our time, and best of all, have no need for any plastic freebies! Can I get a Met Office Ambassador to visit me? To request an ambassador like me (or even me), please fill in the Met Office Ambassador Request Form, you can find a link to this is on my "Featured" section on my profile. Please allow 14 days for us to consider the request and we will see what we can do! #metoffice #earlycareers #apprenticeships #placement

INSPIRED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THE CONSERVATION CAREER FAIR WHICH WAS HELD AT National Institute of Public Administration - NIPA Last Friday I attended the Conservation Career Fair at NIPA, hosted by WCP Zambia with a common misconception that conservation is only for those who specialize in it. However, the event opened my eyes to the numerous opportunities for everyone to contribute to conservation. The event was a resounding success, bringing together conservation organizations, potential employers, students, and graduates under one roof. The panel discussions, keynote speeches, and networking opportunities explored thought-provoking topics, including: - Entrepreneurship in the Conservation Sector - Job Hunting in the Digital Era - Personal Branding Strategies - Effective Online Networking I took away valuable insights that I'd like to share: - Every individual has a critical role to play in environmental conservation, regardless of their career path. Young people, in particular, must step up and take ownership of this responsibility. - Entrepreneurship offers a secure future, as it allows individuals to create their own opportunities. To succeed, focus on developing intellectual capital and offering value, rather than relying on connections. - Job seekers, students must adopt digital tools as it will advantage them. understand the current and future needs of the world to remain relevant. - Authentic storytelling is essential, (you don't have to be like others).it allows individuals to share their unique experiences and perspectives KEY NOTE speaker's message resonated deeply with me: we all have a responsibility to protect the environment, and it's essential to take charge of our lives without making excuses. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have attended this event and hope to inspire others to join me in making a positive impact. Breaking Down Gatekeeping in Job Applications: Why Transparency Matters! In the competitive landscape of job hunting, it's not uncommon to encounter gatekeeping behaviors that hinder collaboration and mutual support. I have seen that a lot of people gatekeep things when it comes to internship and job applications. But let's take a step back and consider the bigger picture. The truth is, the job market is flooded with applicants, and sharing a job posting with a few peers won't significantly impact your chances. In fact, it can create a symbiotic relationship where everyone benefits. I've been fortunate to have peers with whom I exchange job postings, enabling us to cast a wider net in our search so it is a win-win situation for both of us. Imagine if this spirit of collaboration were more widespread? I'm grateful to have encountered peers who value transparency in their application strategies. While I respect individual choices regarding sharing job opportunities, I believe that openness fosters a sense of community and ultimately benefits everyone involved. Remember, no deed of kindness goes unnoticed and will pay dividends sooner or later. Of course, there's a fine line between gatekeeping and oversharing. While sharing insights and strategies can be helpful, divulging specific interview questions crosses a boundary. It's essential to strike a balance and respect the integrity of the interview process. In conclusion, fostering a culture of transparency and mutual support can alleviate some of the burdens of job hunting. By coming together as a community, we can navigate these challenging times with greater ease and resilience. Let's build each other up and pave the way for success together. 🌟 #gatekeeping #transparencymatters #summerinternships
