☀ASTEP H2020 (Application of Solar Thermal Energy to Processes) is a key initiative in project partner Crowdhelix’s 🌞 Solar Energy Helix. 🔎 Researchers supported by the EU-funded ASTEP project have developed leading-edge solar collectors for industrial processes. The SunDial, as the technology is called, promises to lower production costs and carbon emissions for different industries. 🗣 Crowdhelix CCO and Founder, Michael Browne says, “Our Solar Energy Helix has become a thriving community of nearly 500 experts and stakeholders who are positioned at key junctions throughout the solar industry’s burgeoning value chains. In Sweden the housing co-operative Igelbodaplatån, has significantly reduced its energy consumption by installing geothermal heating systems, solar panels and upgrading the windows. Impressively, Igelbodaplatån was ranked as Sweden's 52nd-largest solar energy producer in 2021 and produces up to 500,000-540,000 kWh per year. 🌍 Global solar boom! According to SolarPower Europe’s Global Market Outlook for Solar Power 2024-2028, the world witnessed an incredible 87% growth in solar installations in 2023. This year alone, 447 GW of new solar capacity was added, nearly doubling the 239 GW installed in 2022. Looking to the future, the world is set to surpass 2 TW of total solar capacity after reaching the 1 TW milestone in 2022. The wholesale market (energy+capacity) value of solar generation varies over time but also from one region to another. In 2023, it was lower in CAISO at $27/MWh, but higher in the southeast ($48-65), ERCOT ($67), SPP ($58), and the Pacific Northwest ($48-58). Value also varies within regions, due to transmission congestion, resource quality, or use of technology like trackers. Floating solar energy systems on inland waters have a carbon footprint similar to solar systems on land. This makes them a valuable addition to land-based systems. 💡 This is revealed in a report written by TNO for IEA PVPS - Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme Task 12. It's the world's first report to analyse the #carbon #footprint of these floating solar systems in detail. An important conclusion is that the carbon footprint can be further reduced by more than 40% through three measures. 🔗 Curious?
