Great work from Robert Clarke this week on a small medium risk confined space entry task. Entering a new build vessel on behalf of a client to survey and ensure it was clean ready for commissioning suddenly turned into a slightly bigger task. With Rob being a highly qualified LEEA Inspector / NDT Technician his keen eye for detail soon found flaws in the installation of the coils. These had previously been handed over as complete to our client. The securing nuts on the U-Bolts had been installed incorrectly and there was inconsistency in the way they were fitted meaning several of the securing U-Bolts were loose and 50% of the nuts only finger tight. A simple fix by the team but one that if gone unnoticed by the untrained eye could potentially cause major damage to plant and machinery which would result in long downtime and high costs to rectify. Bearing in mind this is a food processing plant a loose nut or U-Bolt in your food would not be appreciated! The difference here - it's not just about putting a tech with only a confined space qualification into the space, it's about putting a competent person with industry knowledge and experience onto the job to ensure that the service we offer is to the highest standard and our client can safely sign off the installation. Some of these job advertisements are laughable. Inspector needed yesterday, (doesn't specify whether its an ndt inspector, paint inspector or bus ticket inspector, we have to be mind readers). Painter required with Nace coatings level 3 inspection, rate £16.00 ph ltd must inspect own work? Advantageous to own calibrated inspection kit. Some with no rates, duration, location nothing If companies put basic information then it helps everyone, is it onshore, offshore oil/gas or GWO. Is it LTD or Paye If possible the start date and duration If it's a rota We don't want to waste our time applying and we don't want to waste your time so it's for everyone's benefit. Elkhan Sardarov NDT Inspector Certificate: Ultrasonic testing (UT) Level II (ASNT) Ultrasonic testing or UT ultrasonic testing is one of the most accurate non-destructive inspection (NDT) methods. In the UT ultrasonic test, high-frequency sound waves (in the range of MHz) are introduced into the sample to be inspected to identify internal defects and check the properties of the material. Sound waves move inside the materials with a reduction of some of their energy due to the phenomenon of sound attenuation and are reflected at the interfaces and boundaries. In the UT ultrasonic test, ultrasonic waves with a range between 5 and 25 MHz are applied to the tested part by a sound generator. When these waves hit the surface and subsurface discontinuities and defects of the part, they are reflected. These reflections are received by the sound generator and converted into electrical pulses and appear on the screen as a signal. By examining these signals, the operator can find out various information such as location, depth, dimensions, and type of defect.
