Western Europe Section “Large Yacht Stability” by Andy King, Houlder Ltd. 7th January 2025   WES held its first meeting of the new year on Tuesday, 7th January. As usual, the meeting was held in hybrid format, with a total attendance of 56 attendees appreciating an excellent presentation from Andy King.   Large motor yachts occupy an unusual space in the Naval Architecture world. Their owners demand a mix of operability, opulence and originality and hence their designs continually push the boundaries and require fresh thinking. The stability of these vessels is particularly interesting because of the goal of large open arrangements, novel design features and openings close to the waterline. 2024 saw the introduction of the new Red Ensign Group Yacht Code and, with it, the implementation of some new stability requirements. The presentation focused on these changes, and indicated how designers can ensure a compliant design and also how Masters can understand the stability booklet.

Alejandro, one of our talented Project Managers at Port Denia Shipyard, shares his fresh perspective on yacht design and maintenance. With a background in Naval Engineering and a Master in Yacht Design from La Spezia, Italy, he’s well-versed in the latest trends shaping the industry. Trimonoran E-15 Cabin Concept A few months ago one of my contacts, G. Jelle Bilkert (ing.). , sent me details of a TRIMONORAN hull, designed and developed by him in collaboration with the renowned Van Oossanen Naval Architects. Although its development is already some years old, it was really interesting to make a new concept on this type of hull, something different for me. The main idea was to create a simple design. Because of its size (15 meters/49 feet in length) we wanted to design a concept with clear lines, large spaces and at the same time rethink the design as a set of hull + cabin. The large windows allow a more fluid exterior-interior interaction. Although we are facing a closed cockpit we can still get great views of the outside. LOA: 49 feet (15 meters) BOA: 21 feet (6.4 meters) The E-15 project has two variables: One with a totally closed cockpit The other with an open concept Both maintaining the basic lines of the design to achieve harmony between the two models.

🎬Composites in Action🎬 Today we are talking about 'The Biggest Single-Shot Hull Infusion In The World'. Sunreef Yachts has achieved a significant milestone in the construction of the Sunreef 43M Eco, set to become the world's largest eco electric catamaran. The shipyard in Gdansk, Poland - has successfully completed the composite hull infusion process, marking it as the biggest single-shot hull infusion project in the yachting industry. The Sunreef 43M Eco hull measures an impressive 43 meters in length and 15.4 meters in width, encompassing a total composite surface area of 1,700 square meters. This innovative design features a custom-engineered foam core that minimizes weight while maximizing performance. The unmolding of the hull is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.
