The promotional campaign for It Ends with Us, staring Blake Lively, is a perfect example of disaster that can result from a lack of thoughtfulness and context. The film adaption tells the story of Lily Bloom, a floral shop owner who experiences domestic violence. I have not read the book, nor seen the film, but my entire social media feed is currently surrounding Blake Lively and the controversies around this film. The promotional photos and videos portray the film as a romantic comedy, focusing on Blake Lively's fashion, the cutesy floral shop, and Blake Lively's new hair care line. As a viewer, you're left completely unaware of the sensitive and important topic of the film. But people online are pushing back. Readers and survivors of domestic violence are flooding the comments with pushback and distaste. Only now are filmmakers, including Blake Lively, rushing to promote resources and information surrounding DV. I think this campaign has the potential for future case studies and will continue to negatively impact public perception of Blake Lively, Colleen Hoover, and this film. #publicrelations #itendswithus #marketingcampaign #domesticviolence

I shared this post to my exclusive Facebook group called Afro Cafe Magazine: I'm back with a new video to share with you. This time, I'm sharing a short film produced by MISTY COPELAND and written by Daisha Graff and Matthew Law. The story surrounds a once-in-a-lifetime callback for a young black female aspiring actress who wars with racial discrimination, judgment, and cultural appropriation when the producer insists that she “change/alter her hair” for a part in their film. Questions: 1. What does OUR hair represent in this age? 2. Who was the lead’s REAL enemy in this film: the system or herself? 3. Why does the producer refer to her hair as “The Beast” and how does that connotation impact YOUR beliefs about self-worth in Corporate America - even in the Arts? 4. Have you experienced the same or similar treatment, and how did YOU address it? 5. Was the lead character right to fight back? 6. Have you witnessed someone else experience this treatment and wanted to/attempted to speak in their defense? 7. Do legal bills like “The Crown Movement” go far enough to protect OUR hair from discrimination and racial injustice? https://lnkd.in/egFTp8HV Warning: This film contains offensive and explicit language that may not be suitable for all viewers. Viewer discretion is advised.

We now have a new first world problem to consider. When is a celebrity or an organization crossing the line between 'retouching' and altering a photograph? With the plethora of filters available on cell phone cameras the ethical line is even more blurry. Over the weekend, the Royal Palace issued a picture of a seemingly healthy looking Princess Kate and her adorable children. The strategy was to reassure the public that Kate Middleton was recovering well from her recent surgery. As should have been expected, each pixel was highly scrutinized and the result was the conclusion of a highly altered picture. News organizations that distributed the original photo advised its clients to remove it from their publications. Thus instead of muting a crisis (questions about how the Princess was really doing), the Royal Family made it worse. Sadly this is quite common in crisis management. If this were a company, the attempted manipulation would send its stock into a free fall. The legitimate question becomes if we can't trust the company in this instance, where else is the company lying? When this happens, restoring your reputation could take years. A simple solution is to avoid the path of falsifying images and data. The hard questions will come in a crisis, but lying or making up evidence is literally like pouring gasoline on the fire. When you have little to say during a crisis, you can always talk about the process your company is employing to understand the facts and once complete you will have more to say. #princesskate #royalfamily #crisiscommunications #reputationmanagement Altered Photo of Princess of Wales Sparks Uproar https://lnkd.in/escs5FGh

Look at those cars in the background! My guess is that this is the Mouse-trap roller-coaster, Blackpool - picture taken in the early 50’s. There’s a story here - - The girl in the front seat laughing, the boy sat next to her looking slightly demonic! - The girls in the outside seats in the back row look ever so slightly terrified. - The girl in the middle feeling safer because she’s wedged in. Looking pensive, a bit of a Mona Lisa smile forming. Who took the photo? What year was it? Who are those children, sitting with my Mum (can you guess which one she is?) Picture found in my attic with a load of old reeled cine film. 🎥 I’ve still got my Grandad’s box brownie camera, his projector and screen. 📺 They’re treasured memories captured of family no longer here. A new film ‘All of us strangers’ is about the imagined conversations with loved ones no longer here. I’ve yet to see it but I’m sure it’ll make us think about our own circumstances and our own family. Whilst there’s many questions I’d like answers to, it’s a real comfort to have at least a few memories captured in photos and film. It’s so important to ask the questions before it’s too late, don’t you think? Whilst it’s not something we think about in our day to day lives, it’s a wonderful thing to record our own family histories. #InMyOwnWords #RecordingYourFamilyLifeStories #TheAuthorsJourney #AllOfUsStrangers

To be certain, the filmmakers have reached their target demographic right, I sense, from a half-packed hall, for a 9 am, first day, first show, at my local theatre. Which, in general, is a pretty uncommon sight. The gender ratio of the audience is skewed towards women. Given, I guess, the three heroines flashed across the film’s poster/trailers. Namely, Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kriti Sanon—among the top female stars from their respective generations, or age-groups, at any rate. Throughout the pic, they’re pretty much dressed in flight-attendant uniforms. Mostly at work, therefore. Only that their side-profession is they’re con-women of sorts. More like mules smuggling contrabands on flights. This is also a chick flick. I thought I was in for the initial Thelma & Louise kinda vibe-check. Okay, even if we don’t go that far (and please, let’s not), the leading ladies gel fairly well. If anything, Kriti Sanon appears confidently carefree, both easygoing and easy on the eye—this compliment is essential for the veterans she’s sandwiched between. After all, Tabu is what Tabu does. Same for Kareena, no? As a film, Crew falls squarely into the mind-space that Rhea Kapoor (sometimes, along with Ekta Kapoor) have together produced in the past—starting with Aisha (2010), Khoobsurat (2014), the sorts of Veere Di Wedding (2018), Thank You For Coming (2023), if you may. By which I merely mean a medium-budget, low-brow entertainer, subverting the lol mainstream, with scripts (this one, written by Nidhi Mehta, Mehul Suri), fully centred on the female protagonist/s, instead. Wherein even marquee Punjab males, Kapil Sharma, Diljit Dosanjh, show up for walk-on parts here, and that’s just as well. How does Crew—love how this title in Devanagari (on screen) becomes just one letter, ‘ka’, and lots of ‘maatras’—measure up to the girls’ night-outs mentioned above? Flies higher, for sure, while that may not be saying much! Complete review (link in 1st comment)👇🏽Crew: ‘Cray’
