With the Race finish in sight just over a month away now, key takeaways from my offshore race journey so far include: Preparation is paramount! After observing that smooth and efficient manoeuvres often rely on pre-preparation, ensuring that all their lines and jammers are readily accessible before the action starts is vital. This simple step not only prevents line damage but also minimises wear and tear on other critical equipment.

Like most marine publications, we refer to inflatable jackets with an auto-inflate feature in shorthand as “automatic inflatable PFDs,” or “auto-inflating PFDs.” In fact, we should regard all of the so-called auto-inflate PFDs on the market as manually inflatable PFDs with an auto-inflate feature.
This is precisely how International Maritime Organization regards them, for good reason. This is more than just a matter of semantics. Expecting too much of your inflatable PFD can delay reactions, and lead to unpreparedness or equipment failures that can be dangerous, even fatal.
Mark Bologna of Landfall Navigation in Stamford, outlined the specific steps sailors should take each season to ensure their PFD remains reliable. And to emphasize his point, he shared several stories of gear that was rendered useless due to misuse, ignorance, or plain neglect by their owners. Fortunately in these anecdotes the disasters were narrowly averted.

The Different Types of Ballast and Keel in Sailboats
Choosing a sailboat also means selecting a type of ballast and keel configuration. This choice will typically be between a fin keel, a centerboard, or a bilge keel.
The keel is the stability component of the #sailboat. It not only improves directional stability when sailing upwind but also offers performance and comfort specific to each type, based on the #sailor’s needs. Choosing a fin keel, centerboard, or bilge keel is often a decisive factor, influenced by the type of sailing planned: open sea, coastal cruising, racing, or anchorage.
This article presents the characteristics, strengths, and limitations of the three main keel types to help sailors make an informed choice.
