Presented by President Akufo-Addo, this policy signifies Ghana’s dedication to nurturing a mutually beneficial relationship with its diaspora. It values their diverse talents as vital assets in mutual progress. Dr. Dirk Aßmann from GIZ emphasizes the diaspora as pivotal to knowledge and skills that can foster sustainable growth in Ghana. With an estimated 1.5 to 3 million Ghanaians abroad, the impact of the diaspora is substantial – reflected in a 5% increase in remittances totaling US$3.6 billion according to the World Bank’s 2021 report. The policy strategically aims to direct these resources towards transforming Ghana's socio-economic landscape. GREGBE Amavi Mawoussi: Head of the Division of People and Property at the Directorate of Togolese Abroad, Mr. Amadou Cissé: Expert from the African Institute for Remittances (AIR). The primary objective of this exploratory mission was to discuss and explore potential partnerships regarding the technical establishment of the Togolese National Migration Observatory. Key topics of discussion included: - The importance of changing the narrative around migration to highlight the positive contributions of migrants and the diaspora to economic and social development. - The need for robust, country-specific data to inform analysis and enable sound, fact-based decision-making. - Sharing experiences on the impact of remittances and the contribution of the diaspora to economic and social development. - Effective management of migration flows. - Developing a comprehensive national migration observatory that will also focus on diaspora engagement and economic aspects. The meeting was highly productive and laid a solid foundation for future cooperation. Exciting developments at the Global Forum on Migration & Development 2024 in Geneva. The Director of Diaspora Affairs, Akwasi Awuah Ababio, will be speaking at a side event organized by The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and African Foundation for Development (AFFORD). He will be presenting about the newly launched Diaspora Engagement Policy, shedding light on the lessons learned and best practices from recent national and international initiatives. Join the Diaspora Affairs Office as we reflect on our commitment to fostering stronger ties with our diaspora community and explore future policy options for even greater collaboration. The side event will share insights and spark new ideas on how to achieve Objective 19 of the Global Compact on Migration to create conditions for migrants and diasporas to fully contribute to sustainable development in all countries. Towards strengthened implementation of the Global Compact on Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM). In a time of economic uncertainty, the diaspora has emerged as a vital contributor to the socio-economic development of their home countries, providing both financial and social capital. Recognizing this crucial role, an estimated decade-long effort culminated in the development of a comprehensive National Strategy: the Diaspora Engagement Policy. On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) , GIZ Ghana's Programme Shaping Development-Oriented Migration (MEG) is pleased to be part of this national milestone, contributing significantly to SDG 10.7 and GCM 19 & 20, which seek to create an enabling environment for migrants and the diaspora to fully contribute to the SDGs. For me, the beauty of diaspora engagement is its hyperdiversity on all levels - the people and the organisations, the policies and approaches, the ideas and methods, and of course the challenges... This makes for great innovation potential (and an endlessly interesting job for me!) but poses challenges in a world that loves simple labels and seeks quick and one-size-fits all solutions. This guide offers a way to consider the hyperdiversity of DOs in a structured manner, without attempting to limit the definition or pigeonhole. Crucially, it is not a typology 😝 Enjoy!

The Executive team from the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) visited the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President, including international consultants assisting with a workshop on migration's contribution to Ghana's development. The discussion was productive, emphasizing how the diaspora contributes to sustainable development in both origin and destination countries through diverse economic, social, and cultural inputs. We highlighted the significant economic and socio-cultural potential of the diaspora and the importance of the Diaspora Engagement Policy, implemented by the ISIC. The meeting also addressed migrants' contributions to global development, noting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals' recognition of these contributions. Agenda 2063 similarly acknowledges the diaspora's importance, urging Member States to facilitate diaspora participation and free movement, as outlined in the 2018 African Union Free Movement of Persons Protocol. Today, 19 June 2024, we celebrate the 5th anniversary of the European Union Global Diaspora Facility (EUDiF) 🎉 Join us in reflecting on its origins and evolution since its establishment in 2019.
