Many perceive their worth in the construction industry solely based on the number of years they've clocked in. However, it's far more nuanced than mere longevity. Consider this: one individual boasts 15 years of experience within a single company, navigating diverse roles and successfully delivering numerous projects from inception to completion. On the other hand, another candidate holds 15 years of experience spread across five different companies, engaging in limited roles. Who, in your opinion, stands out as the true asset, poised to command higher compensation and recognition?

October is Careers in Construction month, and we asked our employees to share an inside look at what it's like to work in the construction industry! Read their answers below, then head to https://lnkd.in/dJ_B-feW to view current job openings and learn more about joining our team. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ *What initially drew you to the construction industry? Was there a particular moment or experience that inspired you? I’ve always been a builder, even as a kid. I’d find scraps of wood and figure out how to make something out of them. When I first got into the trades, I was really interested in how they constructed big structures. I often found myself wondering, “How do they do that?” I started looking back at history, exploring how buildings were built without the tools we have today. That curiosity has stuck with me and has kept my passion for the construction industry alive over the years. *If you could give advice to someone considering a career in construction, what would you say? Throughout my career, I’ve gained a lot of experience building various projects and passing on lessons to the next generation. One piece of advice I always share is that there’s always another way to approach a problem. Embrace flexibility and keep an open mind—it’s a key part of success in this field. *What aspects of the construction industry do you find most rewarding or fulfilling? One of the most rewarding aspects of the construction industry for me is the satisfaction of seeing a project transform the skyline, especially in downtown areas. When you complete a landmark building it’s fulfilling to know it will be a part of the city’s landscape for years to come. There’s something truly special about contributing to that legacy. ~John Meyers, General Superintendent in Colorado

I regularly encounter people who don’t see the wisdom in taking a position with a growing subcontractor when there are “bigger and better” roles out there at a large company. People are understandably wary of getting pigeonholed in their careers or having to delay that next step. But at Baker, advancement comes quickly to those who demonstrate grit, and there are many opportunities. Baker is one of the largest subcontractors on a project. And I firmly believe there’s a tremendous sense of pride that comes with that. Our co-workers get to be part of some of the nation’s most innovative projects. They can point to the buildings and structures they’ve worked on, and the direct impact they’ve made. And don’t underestimate the breadth of career paths available here. Sure, we have co-workers who place concrete. But we also rely on people skilled at virtual design and construction, estimating, recruiting, marketing, personal development, and beyond. As I like to tell people, we’re a people company that places concrete. We’re not a concrete company that hires people.

In the construction industry, kindness is more than just good manners—it's essential. Our industry is surprisingly small, and paths often cross again with people we’ve worked with before. Whether it’s a subcontractor, supplier, or client, the relationships we build can shape future opportunities. A kind word today could be the key to a great partnership tomorrow. By treating everyone with respect and professionalism, we foster trust, strengthen connections, and create a positive reputation that follows us throughout our careers. After all, the foundation of every great project isn’t just concrete—it’s the people behind it.

At Helix, our mission is simple: Intelligent Building. Bradley's continuing journey within our business is a perfect example of how our building blocks of Building Respect, Building Trust, and Building Success work together. As part of our Building Respect campaign, Nic Davies, our CEO, met Bradley Turrell at Newbury College whilst hosting a careers day. Inspired by Nic, Bradley, who had never thought about a career in construction, approached and asked for work experience. For us, Building Trust is about investing time, effort, and resources into our staff, even those on work experience. For 9 months, we have shown him the ropes, encouraging him to work across all disciplines, learn to make proper builders’ tea, manage his own time, and decide if a career in construction was right for him. And today, we are celebrating Building Success, as he has been accepted to Westminster University to study a degree in Quantity Surveying part-time whilst remaining with Helix. Well done, Bradley! #Construction #CareerDevelopment #BuildingSuccess
