The new Navy's S&T strategy is a tech revolution.
Here, I share the hightlights.
If you want to dive deeper, after SECNAV Carlos Del Toro introduced it at an event in DC, we wrote this:

Our 2024 ASCEND panel session about on-orbit servicing and logistics provided actionable insights and game-changing strategies to boost the maneuverability and longevity of our space assets:
“Servicing is something that inherently makes sense in all the domains. We have limited capability today so where we are in Space Command is taking what we have today and determining how can we put that into the mix to maximize capability for 2027.”
Col. Edward Ferguson, USSPACECOM
Lt. Gen. John Shaw, USSF (Ret.)
Lauren Smith, Northrop Grumman
Ian Thomas, Astroscale U.S.

Working with the US Navy, our colleagues at BMNT proved that a disciplined innovation pipeline can accelerate the integration of new technology. See below for how they did it and check out the full article.
“Using BMNT’s disciplined Innovation Pipeline as the foundation, we designed and introduced the Innovation Navigators Course to establish a common language and framework for the UTF to operate. This framework helped the group hone in on the right operational needs, sourced directly from the combatant commanders, so the focus was on the most important concerns. A key aspect was to bring disconnected stakeholders together in order to move problems forward more quickly. By having representatives from legal, policy, warfighting, technology and finance to deliberate potential solutions, the group was able to zero in on solutions that could be fielded within the Future Years Defense Program (FYDP), the military’s primary planning tool that projects five years into the future.”

Founder/CEO @BMNT I Transitioning Capabilities - Transforming Organizations
This wasn't in the original plan but born from the results of a series of experiments that started elsewhere. Nourished by the thoughtful efforts of a diverse group of government, industry and venture leaders came an exceptionally effective program. I'm grateful for the time and effort the BMNT and the Office of Naval Research teams put into building this program that helps transition technology to our warfighters.
A special hat tip to Michael Stewart, Robert Smith, Richard Carlin and Lorin Selby for rolling up their sleeves and turning a vision into reality.

Keep It Simple Stupid!!! (I haven't decided to offend... it's a process & design principle!) the simpler the process, the better.
The theory is that the simpler the design or (in my world) process, the more likely it is that people will accept it & the greater degree of interaction that follows.
The term is reported as first used in the US Navy. Kelly Johnson, who was the lead engineer at the Lockheed Skunk Works (who built complicated spy planes and loads more!).
Avoid over complexity!

🔵 Spotlight on Marine Corps Innovation 🔵
Our Marine Innovation Unit is at the forefront of adopting cutting-edge capabilities within the Marine Corps. Comprising a team of skilled reservists from various sectors including logistics, cybersecurity, and consulting, MIU tackles significant technological challenges to enhance service effectiveness.
🌟 Leadership Insight 🌟
At the recent Sea-Air-Space expo in National Harbor, Maryland, MIU Commanding Officer, Col. Brooks Braden shared valuable insights. He discussed MIU’s strategic advisory role on emerging technologies, explored the dynamics of public-private partnerships, and addressed the critical balance between leveraging today’s technology and developing tomorrow’s innovations.

🌊 Following on with our Navy Leaders theme this week, here's a great project where Stuart Walker used RDI Technologies Inc. Motion Amplification® technology alongside the Royal Navy team aboard the XV Patrick Blackett:
📊 "We got some great MA data from the four Caterpillar Inc. C32 Ascert engines pushing out 6500kW at full power. Challenging sea conditions at times but great opportunity to test how the kit performs under significant motion from the ship. Worked a treat as we could filter to individual engine/shaft frequencies to remove any low frequency motion."
🚢 The XV Patrick Blackett is a beacon of naval innovation and technological advancement. This experimental trials vessel, managed by NavyX, showcases a shift towards autonomous naval technology with its state-of-the-art infrastructure and robust communication capabilities.
🛰️ The vessel's design emphasises versatility and adaptability, ensuring operational flexibility for various experimental needs. With its advanced maneuverability and control, the XV Patrick Blackett serves as a valuable platform for learning and exploration in modern naval practices, particularly in autonomous systems.

my favorite strategy document to date: "2024 Naval S&T Strategy"
"We cannot manage our scientists and engineers to revolutionary results; instead, we must help them better understand naval problems, prove them with needed resources, give them early responsibility for projects, clear their obstacles, and let them work." (p 11)

💡Naval Science and Technology Strategy
🎤 "As our Department continues to re-imagine and refocus our innovation efforts, I encourage all of you — our Nation’s scientists, engineers, researchers, inventors, entrepreneurs, and problem solvers — to join us. — We are indeed in an innovation race — and it is one we must win. ” SECNAV Del Toro
