This year, we celebrate the empowerment and representation of #women at the Olympics, a vital step towards #gender equality. Female athletes continue to break barriers and inspire future generations, proving that gender should never limit one's potential. However, as we laud these achievements, we must also address critical issues faced by women worldwide. In France, #Muslimwomen who wear hijabs encounter significant challenges due to stringent secularism laws. These laws, intended to promote #neutrality, often result in #discrimination and #marginalization, infringing on their #freedom to express their cultural and religious identity. It's imperative to foster an environment of inclusivity and respect, both in sports and in everyday life. It’s imperative to champion the rights of all women, supporting their right to participate fully and freely in society, irrespective of their religious beliefs, identity, nationality and diversity in its all aspects. For the first time in history, the Paris 2024 Olympics will feature an equal number of male and female athletes, achieving a 50:50 gender split. This is a monumental step towards true gender equality in sports! Sports events like the Olympics attract millions of viewers worldwide. This vast audience provides a golden opportunity to raise awareness, and inspire change. As someone committed to raising awareness for equality, I am thrilled to witness such a significant shift. As most of you know, my racing team, Rosberg X Racing, has championed equal representation from its inception. In the Extreme E series, every team must have a male and a female driver, racing equally at each race. This structure not only promotes gender equality but also demonstrates that, given the right opportunities, female racers can perform at the highest levels. This is evident in the latest findings in Extreme E’s sustainability report, which shows that the average female-male performance gap has closed by 51% in just three years. On Feminist Futures   As feminists endure ongoing and new challenges to their mission to achieve gender equality, exhibition, “Acts of Resistance: Photography, Feminisms and the Art of Protest” at the South London Gallery is a formidable reminder of how the arts remain a potent medium in activism. Like the early feminist movements, who turned to the arts to dismantle their sites of oppression - the kitchen, the bedroom, their bodies and the public domain - the international women and non-binary artists featured demonstrate that subversive acts of creativity are still essential to resisting abuses of power. Photographer, Hoda Afshar, for example, whose photographs of Iranian women displaying their plaited hair – a symbol of resistance during the women-led protests in Iran in 2022 – capture the sense of pain, defiance and unity felt in the wake of the death of Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini at the hands of Iran’s morality police. Importantly, the profound works in this exhibition highlight how the battlegrounds for liberation must be approached through a pluralistic and intersectional lens for us to claim true equality and representation. To achieve equal futures, it is essential that intersectional feminist movements are supported by brands and institutions, through amplifying the voices of the marginalised and taking a public stance against inequality in its myriad of forms. Today, the stark reality is 137 women across the world will be killed by a partner or family member, by the end of today there will be a 137 voices less to join in chorus, 137 voices silenced by violence. In 2024 the fight for independence and rights persists. Our voices, a powerful gift, must be wielded as instruments for change.
