The U.S. Space Force’s Space Rapid Capabilities Office (Space RCO) announced Jan. 29 it selected 10 companies to participate in its inaugural Prime Fusion Pilot Accelerator Program, an initiative aimed at fast-tracking technologies to protect military satellites from orbital threats.

Aviation Week Network featured SDA in their big AFA Air, Space & Cyber issue last week. As SDA moves the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (#PWSA) out of the demo phase and into operations, it was a great time to talk with reporter Vivienne Machi about delivering critical capabilities to the #warfighter like Link 16, advanced missile tracking and missile warning, and beyond-line-of-sight targeting. “If you look at all of our layers and the capabilities that we talked about, we really wanted to use focus as a superpower to make sure that we could deliver as quickly and efficiently as possible. And what I mean by that, we wanted to focus on the two main capabilities right beyond line of site targeting for time sensitive targets and advanced missile detection, tracking and targeting.” – SDA Director, Derek Tournear In the near future, SDA will begin a campaign of 10 launches to deliver more than 150 #Tranche1 satellites on orbit. The French Defense Innovation Agency and armament agency DGA unveiled a low Earth orbit space surveillance program Tuesday at SDSS. French startup U-space will work with multinational missile supplier MBDA to develop a pair of satellites to demonstrate spacecraft detection, characterization and targeting called Toutatis (an ancient Gallic god). There will be a 12-unit “Spotter” cubesat and a smaller target cubesat. Those satellites are scheduled to launch in the next few years. France already is working on surveillance in geosynchronous orbit through a program called Yoda. Two small satellites being built by Hemeria are equipped with cameras from the French space agency CNES to investigate space-based threats. https://lnkd.in/g_PEC-9a

United States Space Force, Gen. Michael Guetlein, issued a stark warning this weekend about China’s accelerating advances in space technology and its growing capacity to challenge the United States’ dominance in orbit. Speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum in Simi Valley, Guetlein described the evolving space environment as increasingly hostile, marked by the erosion of longstanding norms and the emergence of new threats to US space assets. In the past, there was a tacit “gentleman’s agreement” not to interfere with each other’s space systems, Guetlein said. But today, that restraint has dissolved, giving way to increasingly bold tactics such as jamming GPS signals, spoofing satellite communications, conducting cyberattacks, and deploying unmanned surveillance aircraft. #satellites #gps #nationalsecurity https://lnkd.in/g8MF2ib6

The mission criticality of missile warning and tracking architecture cannot be overstated, especially in the face of evolving threats. The USSF Systems Command is spearheading the development of next-generation systems like Missile Track Custody (MTC), designed to enhance resiliency and speed in detecting advanced threats from medium Earth orbit (MEO). Millennium Space Systems is playing a pivotal role in this endeavor, meeting crucial MTC milestones and advancing rapidly with the production of six satellites for Epoch 1. A few observations and questions.... First, I'm a supporter of the SDA's missile warning and tracking system mentioned in this article. I've written articles and editorials supporting it. However, I supported it based on it being part of a multi-orbit system, not just proliferated LEO. The reports in the media of cuts to both MEO and GEO systems are concerning to me. While single digit years for updates and replenishment is a leap forward from 20 year development and acquisition timelines, it's not fast enough during a "rapid and destructive" space campaign that China has been preparing for for years. Second, on the topic of Chinese space attack forces and the idea that proliferated LEO is somehow more resilient and capable of enduring attacks fails to consider recent developments in Chinese thinking on these architectures. Starlink, a similar system currently operating in orbit is seen as a threat by China. They've already been looking at ways to "kill" (their word) such systems with a systems destruction concept of operations. What are we doing to prepare for an attack conops that no longer views the target as individual satellites but the entire system as a single target? Third, notice that the words used to describe the big change for the future are "integrate" and "support combatant commands". While combat support is an important part of these systems design, there was nothing mentioned on how we are going to deter, defend or win a war in space that could very well begin with the targeting of systems such as SDA's or Starlink? It detects and tracks potential missile threats, allowing for timely defensive measures and strategic decision-making. Additionally, NIP-4 contributes to space situational awareness by tracking objects in orbit, including foreign satellites and space debris. This helps prevent collisions and safeguards the operational integrity of Russian space assets. The station's location in Siberia offers strategic advantages. Its remote position enhances security by reducing vulnerability to potential attacks. Furthermore, its geographical placement allows for extensive coverage of the northern hemisphere, enabling comprehensive monitoring of space activities. Historically, NIP-4 has been operational for several decades and has undergone continuous upgrades to enhance its capabilities. It remains an essential part of Russia's defense infrastructure, adapting to evolving challenges in space surveillance and missile defense. The Space Tracking Station NIP-4 near Yeniseysk is a cornerstone of Russia's military space operations. The Space Tracking Station NIP-4 is of paramount importance to the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS). It serves as a critical hub for monitoring and controlling military satellites, ensuring they remain operational and secure. NIP-4's advanced radar and telemetry systems enable precise tracking and management of these satellites, which are essential for reconnaissance, communication, and navigation. Additionally, its role in detecting and tracking ballistic missile launches provides vital early warning capabilities, allowing for timely defensive measures and strategic decision-making. By contributing to space situational awareness and preventing collisions with space debris, NIP-4 helps maintain the operational integrity of Russia's space assets. Its strategic location in Siberia further enhances its effectiveness by offering broad coverage and added security from potential threats. Understanding the Russian and Chinese military infrastructure and particularly their Spaceborne mission support and capabilities is paramount.
