Love to see startups doing hard things and doing well https://lnkd.in/eDQRuiVn Nearly 400% growth to £29mn revenues in 2023 is a strong indicator for PMF and going into Breakout Stage. But with the Breakout Stage come a new set of challenges, especially hard when doing Hard Tech. Indeed, Zoe has said it overhired and is correcting. A common mistake at the breakout stage is to scale up prematurely, before fixing weak links in the chain. Often driven by a desire to achieve "T2D3". I root for Zoe and sincerely hope the company course corrected on time, and manages this difficult phase. A good case study of this common pitfall is VanMoof, which achieved strong PMF, people loved their product, but it hadn't sufficiently addressed major weak links (maintenance issues) prior to scaling further.

People are looking down on 9 to 5s, but it’s a really nice place to earn experience in large-scale enterprises. Now I can see that successful startups with an exit plan start as a very precise cog for a large enterprise machine. You can’t understand if you are not in the machine at least once.

Startups that get stuck at $1M-$5M in ARR are not failures. They can be amazing businesses. One of the problems in the startup community is the infatuation of raising big VC funds and becoming billion dollar unicorns. Less than 1% of SaaS companies make it to $10M in ARR. We can't forget that outside of tech, most small businesses make much less than $1M a year in revenue. We need to normalize building amazing profitable companies under $5M in revenue that can still be very profitable.

A few interesting facts about Placer.ai, on the occasion of their recent round at $1.5B. 1) It's perhaps the most successful remote-first enterprise-facing SaaS startup ever. $100M+ of high-growth ARR on 5-7 figure deals, up ~100x in the past 5 years, on a truly-distributed operation. Wow. 2) Noam Ben-Zvi has a 96% approval rating. Very few world-class startups also have CEO ratings at such a level. Go Placer!!
