Cardiac Risk In The Young 7 years ago Charlie Craig went to sleep and didnt wake up he was 15 years old. Charlie was ultra fit and was already making his way in the world of elite mountain biking. Charlie was my son Isaac's mate. Let talk about C-R-Y (Cardiac Risk in the Young) -their aim is "Preventing young sudden cardiac deaths through screening and research and supporting affected families" It is so so so so important that anyone between 14 -35 gets screened to identify those at risk. "Screening to identify young people at risk is cost-effective when conducted correctly – the conditions can be treated, securing a future for those identified." All young people should have the choice to be tested." C-R-Y Please see links to the C-R-Y website. Please take time to read and explore the site. https://lnkd.in/eThBzymy

Take a look at this article from Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News today. Concussion and CTE were big-ticket items following the (more than USD1bn) settlement with the NFL, and the movie "Concussion" with Will Smith. This article brings the issue closer to home, as a legend of Australian sport shares his experience and calls for support in raising awareness and educating kids on how to play these sports safely. Some years ago, I had the privilege of working on the development of the Nurochek system by Headsafe - an FDA cleared medical device for the measurement and analysis of brain electrical activity during the generation of visual evoked potentials. The goal was to create a device which would provide a more objective means for the diagnosis of concussion, and method to monitor recovery from such injuries to ensure patients are fully healed before getting back on the field. More research is necessary before the Nurochek - or another innovative device - will become the newest weapon in the arsenal against CTE and second impact syndrome. I sincerely hope that this budget proposal is taken seriously, and that some portion of the funding can be applied to research to take the guesswork out of the fight against this debilitating disease. For anyone interested in further reading, here is a WSJ exposé on the current state of the NFL settlement: https://lnkd.in/dYRd6P9i https://lnkd.in/df2HQtFG

Great to see a very sad sudden death leading to a very positive initiative to prevent future sudden cardiac deaths. As a heart specialist and sibling who lost my younger brother at 21 to same diagnosis, I strongly support every effort to prevent premature cardiac death. Screening is one way. Learning cardiac resuscitation is equally important. If you have an worry about your heart health, get checked out as it might save your life or that of a family member. #hearthealth #suddenarrhythmicdeathsyndrome #irishheart #beaconhospital #lifestylemedicine

Part 3: Success Stories and Broader Impact Post Title: Enhancing Rehabilitation with the Gait Harness System: Success Stories and Broader Impact Post Content: In the final part of our series, we share inspiring success stories and discuss the broader impact of using the Gait Harness System (GHS). Success Stories: Overcoming the Hump I have numerous examples of people overcoming significant challenges, regaining their function with the support of a dedicated therapy team from home and in the clinic. One such person is Knute. Knute was 11 years old when he experienced a traumatic brain injury following an automobile accident. He had not walked since, being at high risk for falls. Twenty-two years later, Knute began his journey with the GHS. Knute learned to walk again without any braces or computerized assistance, safely with trained family members and staff members using the GHS. He began walking just a few steps and now walks up to 800 feet per session. After 23 wheelchair-bound years, Knute has made remarkable progress in a short period of time and continues to surpass expectations. His story is a testament to the power of consistent, challenging therapy and the GHS’s role in providing the necessary support for overground training. Knute experienced the stimulation and sensation of sensory feedback with his feet on the ground and moving his legs, which were critical in helping him get over the hump. Knute’s success is a powerful example of the progress that can be achieved when patients are challenged at the level they need. The Bigger Picture According to pre-COVID data from the CDC, about 40 million people in the home are confined or need help walking every day. This number has likely increased due to COVID-related health issues that have affected people's ability to walk since 2020. There is so much more that can be done for these individuals, and the GHS is a crucial tool in this effort. Conclusion While initial hesitation is natural, the overwhelming evidence and extensive experience with the GHS highlight that there is no better time to start using the system than right now. By doing so, you can take a significant step towards helping your patients regain their mobility and independence. 🌳 In a moment of madness, I have just signed up to do the Round Sheffield Run in June. I nearly didn't. Do you ever find your first reaction to things takes over? When I got the email letting me know registration would be opening for the run, my first thoughts were: I can't do that. I don't have time. I've never run further than 10k (it's 20k, over 11 stages!) Every time I try to start running again, my knee hurts. I haven't actually been for a run in over a year. These thoughts almost made me delete the email immediately. But I didn't. I left it there and gave myself some space. That space allowed me instead to open up to: 🌟 Do I want to do that? 🌟 How can I do that? It then occurred to me that I don't need to do it alone. I put a shout out and sure enough a lovely friend is keen to not only run it with me, but also to train with me. Georgina Hollinrake, you are the best! Suddenly it is seeming like a lot more fun - I have a goal to work towards, an accountability partner to do it alongside me and keep me motivated, and a plan for how to do it. The added bonus is I get to spend more time with my lovely friend too - one of my other goals for the year is to make more time to see friends. I love it how these things start to snowball once you start setting your intentions! If you feel like you need a boost, help with accountability or goal setting (working on 12 week cycles is amazing!) or anything else that you feel needs sorting out in your life just now then do book a free Discovery Call to chat about how I can best support you.

Super proud of the superstar St John Ambulance volunteers who helped save the life of Richard Walker, Exec Chair of Iceland foods, at this year's London Marathon. Richard talked about his treatment for heatstroke on BBC Breakfast's big red sofa and was joined by highly skilled Cadets Becky and Matt and junior doctor, James, who were part of the brilliant team of St John volunteers supporting the public last weekend.
