The challange is this - is the horse really dead or the rider is incompetent?
The inside view is always about the rider. We are hardly able to see that the growing irrelevance of business models and that the change needed is often deeper and more fundamental.
Finally somehow the clutter of modernity often confuses us and some of these ancient addages reflect so much more wisdom.

Hubris and arrogance are often present in such cases, yet hindsight is always 20/20. The alignment of corporate incentives and decision-making often doesn't allow for the acceptance of visionary decisions that don't yield immediate results.
Not every company has a Steve Jobs who can say, 'If you don't cannibalize yourself, someone else will.'
This same type of approach often restricts thinking about IT investments, e.g., into new SCM. Benefits are harder to estimate, and performance improvements of internal operational functions rarely excite senior management.
In addition to Blockbuster, the most notable examples of such bankruptcies are in retail - Borders, Toys'R'Us, Sears...

The Dead Horse Theory derives from taking a business model that has diminishing returns and failing, yet continuing to sink time and money into it.
But think about the Dead Horse Theory when it comes to an employee that has lost their drive, can’t be motivated, and continually exhibits poor performance. Is the horse dead or just lost direction/inspiration? Coaching can sometimes revive the horse and get them back on track. But there are times when that horse needs to be replaced.
Horses aren’t cheap and finding the right one may take time. A good leader (cowboy) will know what’s going on with the horse and what course of action should be taken.
