What makes a good trailer? Well, budget, of course. However, the elements of a good trailer are the same as the elements of a good #story that expert #storytellers know all about. I don't care if you're creating a trailer, spinning a tale for your daily #LinkedIn post, creating a treatment for your upcoming script or planning your seven-part book series about the accidental boy-wizard who comes into his own during his teenage years and grows up to become the most powerful wizard to ever live. There are elements you MUST HAVE and this trailer has them. I won't cover the obvious ones, of course: plot, resolution, conflict, etc. This trailer, however, has #emotion ... but not just one of them. I bought into this story already because of other elements and emotions in this trailer like #friendship, #teamwork, #villains, #powerconflict, #despair, #heroism, #character, #hope and #hopelessness. Also, if music is an option, this song is perfect because it allows the creator to find just the right emotional beats at the right time to cause the right amount of impact on the viewer. Story is the art of putting a puzzle that consists of these elements together in a way that will emotionally affect the reader, viewer, consumer. This trailer is a great example of that. For more than a decade, I have been honing my storytelling skills through many avenues, including, at various times and in varying degrees, journalism, standup comedy, improv, interviewing, editorial writing, video production and audio podcasts.

When David Kim invited me to play a pre-alpha version of this game last year, it took me less than 10 minutes to fully understand the vision of this game design and be fully bought in to the promise. I knew right away I wanted to be part of the project. RTS has always been my favorite genre and it will always hold a core place in my heart. Going back to my first brush with Warcraft II in the college dorm, playing 4v4s with friends, to jumping into the original StarCraft as a beta tester and it kickstarting my career in the industry, to eventually becoming the PR lead on StarCraft II, my life literally wouldn't be the same without RTS. The magic I feel playing Battle Aces whisks me straight back to those carefree games of War2 in the Berkeley dorms...and the obsessive late nights grinding ladder in StarCraft. Except that this is a game that distills the peak thrills and strategic mastery of those games into manageable 5-7 minute matches -- without the frustration of diagnosing cheesy rushes or the slog of 30, 45, 60 min stalemates. As an old guy and a parent now...what the dev team have done feels almost like a magic trick - I can play a satisfying amount of this game without feeling like I'm shirking responsibility. David and the Uncapped Games development team have vastly lowered the steep barrier to entry for the genre while making zero compromises on depth, and skill mastery. Now, getting folks to see past decades-long, antiquated, and calcified perceptions of RTS and open their minds to trying the game is an altogether different challenge. Working on my FPS project solo on and off as a passion project/for fun. Played a lot of left 4 dead 2 recently and really enjoyed the melee shove and shooting enemies while still stunned. Or like in action films when the hero kicks/hits an enemy and shoots them up while they're still recovering. Implemented a feature similar to that in my project. But I also liked the melee in FEAR with it being an instant kill so went with both options. The first kick at full health stuns or knocks down the enemy, the second hit kills or kills instantly at low enemy health. #gamedev #gamedevelopment #gamedesign #gamedesigner #unrealengine4 #unrealengine #ue4 #firstpersonshooter #fps
