Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) allows organizations to protect their brand and prevent phishing attacks on their customers. Email phishing continues to be the most popular method used by hackers to trick users into clicking malicious links and divulging confidential information. BIMI enables strong authentication of the email sender and allows end users to see the organization’s verified logo, easily distinguishing it from spoofed emails. See inbox screenshots below courtesy Google and Apple. To enable BIMI, organizations need to adopt email best practices and get a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) from a Certificate Authority (CA) that verifies their domain and logo ownership.

To qualify for a VMC, an organization had to trademark their logo. Many organizations have logos they would like to use but have not registered it with a trademark office. Gmail announced that it now supports Common Mark Certificates (CMC), a new type of BIMI certificate. CMCs allow a broader range of senders to utilize BIMI, who might not have the registered trademark required for a VMC. With a CMC, the sender's brand logo will be displayed without the additional verified blue checkmark that's displayed for VMCs in Gmail. Apple Mail also supports BIMI and recent WWDC announcements suggest further UX improvements coming.
