Helsing at NATO Edge: Affordable Mass for the Eastern Flank   At the NATO Edge Conference, Helsing’s Managing Director for France, Antoine de Braquilanges, showcased how our software-first solutions deliver affordable mass—scalable and effective capabilities to strengthen NATO’s defence, particularly on the eastern flank.    Antoine also reinforced our commitment to trusted AI infrastructure for defence, ensuring ethical, reliable technology to protect democratic nations.    Helsing will support NATO with the tools needed to meet today’s challenges. 

This evening Threshold ISR was privileged to attend the annual UK Chief of the Defence Staff lecture at the Royal United Services Institute. Admiral Sir Tony Radakin's key note address focused on the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, the continuing challenge to the rules-based international order presented by Russia, Iran, North Korea and China, and the resolve of NATO and the UK's other strategic alliances in meeting those challenges. All of which will frame the anticipated Strategic Defence Review in 2025. Of particular note was the acknowledgement of the need for Defence to be more risk-tolerant in everything it does, and to strive towards removing unnecessary layers of bureaucracy. Key takeaway for the evening: In order to keep pace with the rate of change in technology and innovation, UK Defence may need to develop a twin-track approach to capability development. The first track being the continued management of large-scale/long-term programmes with a "fail-safe" approach, and the second track being characterised by a willingness to take greater risk on smaller projects that are "safe to fail".

On Saturday (19 October) NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte joined a meeting of G7 Defence Ministers in Naples 🇮🇹 to discuss how to further increase support to Ukraine, ramp up defence industrial production, and more. The Secretary General highlighted the value of cooperation between G7 and NATO, given the complex nature of the challenges to shared security. On Ukraine, he underscored how ensuring that Ukraine has what it needs to prevail is critical to security and stability well beyond the region. As Ministers discussed defence industrial production, Mr Rutte noted the importance of working together - across the Alliance and beyond - to not only increase and speed up production but that these efforts are better aligned by working to NATO standards. The Secretary General also outlined how NATO is doing more to build its partnerships, not only in the Indo-Pacific but also in NATO’s southern neighbourhood - another area on which G7 discussions focused. Even though Europeans have significantly increased their defence spending over the past two years, there is still a massive transatlantic imbalance in NATO. The potential re-election of Donald Trump puts NATO’s future into question. Trump has controversially stated that he would encourage Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” to any NATO country that doesn’t meet the 2% defense spending target.   Conversely, if President Biden is re-elected, NATO may still struggle as the administration juggles European defense commitments with the rising threat from China.   This webinar will explore these scenarios, discussing NATO’s adaptability and the broader implications for international security.

Céline PAJON 10 October 2024 Accroche On Tuesday, October 1, Shigeru Ishiba was sworn in as Prime Minister of Japan. His proposal to revise the security alliance with the United States and create an Asian version of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) attracted attention and sparked lively debate. Continuing the defense reforms initiated by Shinzo Abe and Fumio Kishida, Ishiba also aims to strengthen Japan’s strategic autonomy by revising Article 9 of the Constitution, rebalancing roles within the Japan-US alliance, diversifying its strategic partners and adopting confidence-building measures with China. For the time being, the idea of an Asian NATO seems unrealistic; the regional security architecture in the Indo-Pacific appears to be moving less toward a collective defense pact than a system of integrated deterrence, structured around alliances and security pacts. Japan and the Japan-US alliance play a central role in this. 

Via NDC: The new NATO Force Model: ready for launch? NATO Allies are in the process of a dramatic change to the Alliance’s force structure, which will see the NATO Response Force (NRF) replaced with a three- tiered structure of Allied forces, to include an Allied Reaction Force (ARF), all of which is designed to better defend and deter. This new NATO Force Model faces a variety of challenges, from whether Allies will have sufficient forces at appropriate readiness levels to fulfil their own objectives to whether SACEUR will still have the authority to “alert, stage and prepare” Allied forces as a crisis emerges, through whether and how the Alliance’s command structure now needs a re-examination as well. To avoid the potential pitfalls and ensure the Alliance fulfils its own vision, NATO and its member nations ought to consider an array of mitigating steps, such as using snap exercises and inspection visits to ensure forces are indeed manned, trained and equipped, and emphasizing mass and capacity in Allied acquisition plans and capability targets. https://lnkd.in/dY7qDnBG
