🌱Around the globe, markets are shifting towards sustainability, but what does this mean for #ASEAN businesses? Don't miss an enlightening discussion at the 11th SWR with one of our panellists, Dr. Rizal Affandi Lukman, Secretary-General, Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries. At the SWR, he will be sharing his insights as part of the panel on 'Trade Regulations And Sustainability Standards – Challenge Or Opportunity?'. Key questions to be discussed: • What impact will the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and other rules being introduced by major markets have on trade with ASEAN? • How are companies and smallholders navigating different sustainability standards, including both trade rules and product certifications? • Are these requirements a burden or do they present opportunities, such as granting market access and giving financiers more confidence to invest in ASEAN’s resource sectors? 🔗 Register now: http://bit.ly/SWR2024 🌎 Theme: Next Economy and the Future of Resources 📅 Date: Thursday, 9 May 2024 🕝 Time: 9:00am - 4:00pm 📍 Venue: Fullerton Hotel, Singapore For more information, visit our website at: https://lnkd.in/gNjX92Y 👤 For membership enquiries: membership@siiaonline.org 📰 For media-related enquiries: media@siiaonline.org #SWR2024 #11SWR #ASEAN #sustainability #SIIA

🌍 Have you ever wondered why international trade is crucial in transitioning to a circular economy? ♻️ Understanding the importance of international trade in this context is key to driving sustainable and inclusive growth. The OECD's Policy Highlights report sheds light on the link between international trade and the transition to a circular economy. Let's explore why it matters: 1️⃣ Enhanced resource efficiency: International trade enables countries to access resources that may be scarce in their regions. By promoting resource-efficient practices, trade can contribute to minimizing waste, reducing resource depletion, and fostering circularity on a global scale. 2️⃣ Market expansion and collaboration: Trade facilitates the exchange of knowledge, technologies, and best practices among nations. It opens up new markets for circular products and services, encourages innovation, and drives collaboration between businesses and countries to accelerate the circular transition. 3️⃣ Sustainable value chains: International trade offers opportunities to create sustainable value chains. By integrating circular principles across the entire supply chain, from sourcing to production and distribution, we can reduce environmental impacts, improve social conditions, and ensure the longevity of resources. Recognizing the interplay between international trade and the circular economy is crucial for enabling a more sustainable and resilient future. Let's harness the power of trade to drive circularity, foster global collaboration, and positively impact people and the planet. I had a dialogue session with the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) members and APEC Senior Officials on the sidelines of the ABAC Program here in Kuala Lumpur. I reiterated the importance of APEC as an important platform in this era especially when geopolitical issues have significantly impacted trade relations. The global trade agenda has to evolve with time. The new trade agenda would have to take into account that trade has to ensure workers are well-paid, and both advanced economies and developing countries could sustain a robust middle class. APEC needs to look at the role of government in shaping investment priorities particularly green transition. In this context, SOM together with the business sector need to look into how to push for green investments projects. Collectively, we must ensure that the outcomes of our collective efforts lead not only to economic prosperity but serve as important building blocks towards a continuous, resilient and sustainable growth into the future.

Group Head of Trade Facilitation - GoTrade at DHL Group Delivering sustainable and inclusive economic growth through trade.
I'm incredibly honored to be at the WTO Public Forum today, participating in a high-level panel discussion on "Behind the Headlines: Trade Realities in a Re-Globalizing World." Despite the challenging narratives around global trade, the evidence points to its enduring resilience in the face of complex political dynamics. Economic research, like the DHL Connectedness Report, continues to show that global trade adapts and thrives, even under pressure. The private sector remains a strong advocate for free and open trade, recognizing it as a key catalyst for connecting economies and improving lives worldwide. However, significant challenges remain—particularly in fostering sustainability and promoting environmental business practices to reduce deforestation, plastic waste, and air pollution. Strong public-private partnerships will be crucial in establishing the necessary regulations and procedures to address these issues. Additionally, it's vital that we connect more MSMEs to the global marketplace so they can benefit and grow in an economically sustainable way. It was a privilege to exchange ideas with esteemed colleagues like Rupa Ganguli FRSA, Valerie Picard Martina Kavanagh, and Steven Altman. Their insights brought invaluable depth to the conversation. Looking forward to the continued dialogue! 🌍 Empowering Sustainability and Prosperity in Asia 🌱 At the end of June 2024, Dr Ma Jan delivered a speech at the "Empowering Sustainability and Prosperity in Asia: Innovative Financial Solutions for Connectivity and Transition" held in Hong Kong. He highlighted: "Developing countries face a substantial financing gap in addressing climate change and the sustainable development agenda, amounting to trillions of dollars annually. One of the key reasons for this gap is the lack of capacity to develop sustainable financial markets and organize green projects. As a platform for integrating and providing global knowledge on sustainable finance, CASI offers training programs such as in-person events, webinars, and online learning to help bridge the capacity gap in the Global South."
