🚀 Highlighting our 2021 publication! 🚀 Our scoping review, "Patient Engagement in Preclinical Laboratory Research," explores both the benefits and challenges of involving patient partners in research. Here’s what we found: Benefits: 🤝 Mutual Learning: Researchers and patients learn from each other. 🎓 Skill Building: Opportunities to develop new skills, knowledge, interests, and perspectives. 📈 Improved Study Quality: Patient input enhances study quality and efficiency. 🗣️ Public Communication: Better communication with the public and strengthened trust in research. 👥 Enhanced Recruitment: Increased trainee recruitment/retention and external collaboration. Challenges: 📚 Knowledge Gaps: Differences in research knowledge and experience may impact the quality of research and engagement. 👥 Limited Perspectives: Engaging a small number of patient partners can limit diverse perspectives. We believe in the power of collaboration to drive impactful research and improve healthcare outcomes. A thorough run through of the key issues. Worth noting: “From a life sciences industry perspective, creating successful partnerships generally means: Engaging clinical leaders who carry the respect of peers as role models, see the value in innovation, and can demonstrate how to integrate it into the patient pathway, Assembling the right collaboration of organisations necessary to implement across the system for the relevant set of patients,” The well documented strains on the workforce point to a major stumbling block if life sciences is to deliver deep and wide for the NHS. A workforce that lacks the time to upskill and lead effectively in this space is a significant concern. How we build agile and responsive collaborations across systems not noted for these characteristics is another issue that merits exploration. Finally the critical role of Universities as fellow anchor institutions and home to thought leaders and experts who straddle many organisations and are ideally placed to help shape how we go about delivering and evaluating the impact of any change is one that needs to be acknowledged.
