While Marketing may be one of the most demanding careers in the world, Sales is definitely one of the most rewarding. I remember starting up, in Sales with L&T Valves almost 20 years back. As part of International Sales, I began by writing multiple pre-sales quotations, answering technical queries about the product and giving guided tours of the manufacturing setup to prospective clients from Oil & Gas industry. As I put in the years, I kept growing within the team. Graduated to lead commercial and technical negotiations with buying teams, visits to offshore clients in Far East for business development and ultimately becoming Key Account Manager for the region - handling multiple stockists, distributors and end users in the O&G sector. The biggest high point during my initial days came, when I single handedly closed the deal with a German EPC client for a Malaysian refinery project. My first supervisor Venkatesh S, a seasoned professional, mentored me, allowing me to take charge in discussions as I gained confidence. 3 years later, I decided to leave L&T to pursue a career in management and joined IIM Lucknow. Since then, I have worked as a marketing professional across different sectors (FMCG, Consumer tech, Retail to name a few). However, the valuable lessons from my initial Sales experience have emphasized the importance of building relationships, earning trust, and persevering.
