So, I recently hopped on a train after ages, thinking of those times when I used to carry cards and games, all set to make friends with fellow travelers. Back then, striking up conversations and playing games with strangers was the norm. But times have changed. People have changed. Especially the younger lot. I noticed a shift from being social butterflies to more of a solo vibe. And guess what's a big part of this change? Reels and short videos. On this recent train trip, it wasn't the usual chit-chat and games. Instead, everyone seemed plugged into their screens, lost in their own world. It's become a thing now—a single person in each coach glued to their phone, diving deep into reels with full-volume mode on. It's quite a shift, right? The fun, lively talks during travel have turned into quiet moments spent watching stuff on screens. But here's the thing: Are we missing out on real connections beyond the digital world? I believe it's crucial to pause and reflect on these shifts in our society and ponder about the questions that left us here. #travel #digitalworld #theshift #question

2x Business Owner | I do marketing and nomad retreats 🌺 | Passionate about travel, remote work, and self-development
Imagine being stranded on an island with no internet. Nightmare, isn’t it? It’s even worse for digital nomads like me… because a strong internet connection is our lifeline. Luckily, most European countries offer reliable internet, like here in Spain. But as someone who: → loves going to isolated environments → creates UGC content for my brand → runs digital businesses I always ensure: → strong wifi access → backup cellular data → requesting speed test screenshots, especially on Airbnb bookings. Having good internet access unlocks endless opportunities. So, embrace the adventure, but never compromise on connectivity. PS: Any other tips for new digital nomads on prioritizing internet access? ________ I’m Marie, the ambitious island voyager. This year we have a new team of nomads who are dedicated to securing the festival as an independent event for the nomad community. We are working hard to make this another memorable festival. In the coming weeks we’ll include a small introductory message from each of our team members. First up: Marcos Campos (Cha Cha) one of our new co-owners is looking forward to seeing you in Bansko. Like many nomads, I don’t fit neatly into a box. I’m a software engineer. I’m a musician. I’m a yoga teacher. I enjoy investing. I fly planes. I teach meditation. And of course, I enjoy exploring countries.I first became location independent in 1993 - over 30 years ago. Software development has provided most of my income over the years, and enabled location independence. That, and day-trading, playing poker, and real estate investment. Covid years kept me at home for 3 years (in Austin, Texas). As I watched remote work and digital nomadism leap forward, I became curious. What was the state of the community? In 2023, I was ready to travel again. I went to Bansko Nomad Fest to see what this crowd of digital nomads was all about.I fell in love - with the town and the community of nomads gathered there. I was thrilled to see the diversity of age, the balance of gender, and the range of professional experience. Surprisingly, even with people from so many backgrounds and countries, there seemed to be a common bond. A common ethos. People seemed connected.“I found my tribe,” is a phrase I heard often that week. During the talent show, I learned that Matthias was ready to hand over the reins of the festival. There was a group of experienced nomads I had come to know there. They had great integrity and unbounded spirit. They wanted to make sure the festival survived and flourished. I said, “I want in! Let’s keep this vibe going.” I recently invested in a Mezcal company. It’s called Casaani, the Zapotec word for nomad. (That’s no coincidence. The CEO? She’s a nomad.) That venture will take me from where I am now in Thailand to Oaxaca (via Texas) for the harvest in late spring. Then I’m off to Liddes, Switzerland where Pelé Philipp Alexander Weber, Stefan Stolwijk and a small team are operating a coliving (Coliving.frilingue) that we hope will serve as a pilot for larger projects offering nomads equity in real estate. Then it’s Bansko in June! Mahsa Homayounfar Amber Daughn Stephen Halper Uwe Allgäuer Holger Mette Marcos Campos @cris

Day 2: Know Your Market Inside Out Lesson 2: Deep market research is your best friend. Understanding your market is fundamental. Dive deep into market research to know your target audience, their needs, and preferences. Analyze your competitors and identify gaps in the market. This knowledge will help you tailor your products or services to meet the demands of your customers, giving you a competitive edge. Example: Before launching Airbnb, the founders spent a lot of time understanding the travel market and the needs of travelers. This research helped them create a platform that addressed the gaps in the market, leading to their massive success.

Did you know that only 42% of people in South East Asia have access to the internet? Or that only 34% of those in Africa are able to regularly go online? While the internet is a way of life in many regions, it’s still not widely available to all, which leads to economic disparity, reduced literacy, limited educational opportunities, and more. That’s why Meta is working to connect the world, which is not only to address these elements, but also to maximize its own business opportunities, and why projects like Starlink are important for global development. Because without universal internet access, as a base minimum, inequity will remain, which then branches into all manner of other problems. To provide some perspective on this, the team from Visual Capitalist have put together this overview of internet access around the world. Some interesting stats, worth considering when you look at ongoing web developments.

If you are not AirBnB, why are you trying to be AirBnB? I don't know about y'all but I'm really bored of the comparison games that go on in tech and product. "Ooooh somebody does X differently to me, that means that I/we suck and we immediately have to become them". Why? Benchmarking against high performers is great. I'm all for that. I'm all for learning and improving. But too often this conversation sounds and feels like just a big ego measuring contest where someone stands on stage, shines up their messy reality for public consumption, pretends that their practices are perfect and that their situation isn't stressful and hard, and then everyone in the audience runs around trying to prove that they too are "good enough". Ouch. Great recipe for beating yourself up, feeling like crap, and burning out. Fun if you're into that kinda thing I guess, but I prefer other hobbies 🏔 🌴 I get it. Everyone has imposter syndrome. You know what might help? Stop comparing yourself to staged PR versions of reality, ignoring any contextual differences between your situation and theirs, and instead focus on YOU, on your situation, and your reasonable next step. I live in Brisbane, Australia. I don't know any companies that are anywhere near the same context as AirBnB or what goes on in the unicorn Silicon Valley companies. But I do know lots of smart people that have some really great, achievable next step actions they can take, that are specific to their context. If you're a fish, be a fish. Don't worry about what the whales are doing. Just keep swimming.
