A small step for us, but a giant Leap to Zero for the sustainable construction community! This week, Rijkswaterstaat hosted the second International Conference on Emission Free Construction Sites ‘Leap to Zero’. This network of public infrastructure owners from Europe and abroad convened with OEMs, contractors, international organizations and other stakeholders to discuss the transition towards a zero emission future in the construction sector at an international level. It was a real pleasure to organise an event with so many inspiring people committed to the goal of a net zero construction sector! My key takeaways of the conference are: - Transitions can go surprisingly fast. We have seen the examples, for instance in the city bus industry. - Don’t be disappointed if the final goal is not reached immediately. We are doing this step by step. - Collaboration across the value chain (contractors, manufacturers, infrastructure owners and policy makers) is crucial to set the wheels of change in motion.  - Demand in projects is essential to offer the market a reliable, stable growth path. - In many countries, national regulation that brings clarity for the sector is a goal for the long term. To keep stakeholders motivated, short term focus should be on the zero emission ambitions of local or regional authorities. - Standardisation of zero emission equipment will significantly improve the operation of electric machinery. Four global manufacturers agreed to start discussions on common efforts to reach standardisation. I’m also happy to share that a small working group has been set up to work on a governance model for the Leap to Zero-network to ensure future activities and events of the network. International cooperation and information exchange is the key to a successful transition. Great things are ahead of us! We hope to see each other soon next year! Sweco wins SEK 400 million contract from the Swedish Transport Administration for project planning of a new railway along parts of the East Coast Line between Uppsala and Stockholm. The contract, which will run from 2024 until 2035, will comprise project planning in railways, roads and road structures, building construction, architecture, water and sewage as well as consulting in environmental and digital solutions. The aim of the expansion “Four tracks Uppsala” is to meet the increased need for sustainable passenger and freight transport in the area between Uppsala and Stockholm. “Major, necessary investments are now being made in Europe to increase the share of sustainable travel and transportation in the ongoing green transition. The ambitious expansion here for increased sustainable travel is therefore positive for Sweden’s development and competitiveness,” says Ann-Louise Lökholm Klasson, President of Sweco in Sweden. I had the pleasure of attending the insightful event "Funding Transport: Creating an Investible and Impactful Transport Network", hosted by Arup and Engineers Ireland. A big thanks to Lean Doody, who did an outstanding job moderating the discussion, and to the esteemed panelists: Marcello Corsi, Head of Rail Investment at the National Transport Authority; Alan OBrien, Principal Transport Advisor at the European Investment Bank (EIB); and Kevin Meaney, Principal Officer at the Department of Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery, and Reform. My key takeaways from the panel discussion: 1. Addressing the fundamentals early on is crucial. From the consulting side, we must ensure that the project outline or feasibility study is rock-solid from the start. Asking the right questions, clearly defining project objectives, and anticipating potential issues are critical steps. Clients expect options that are not only fully developed but also defensible, and it’s important for us to help them act as informed partners throughout the process. Credibility in the planning stage is key to ensuring that the project moves smoothly to execution. 2. Considering blind spots, such as operational and life cycle costs, is essential. We need to think beyond just the initial infrastructure design and factor in longer-term impacts that can influence decision-making. Ensuring that both operational efficiency and sustainability are embedded in our solutions will ultimately drive successful outcomes for both clients and communities. It was an engaging discussion with a lot of valuable insights shared about building impactful, future-proof transport networks.
