Models Work and Don't Have Value, Part IV: 'Because the Way Life Should Be Needs to Connect with the Way Life Is' After a few weeks disconnecting, I found insight about AI and humanity during a recent personal milestone: dropping our daughter off at university. At her matriculation ceremony, Dr. Wesley Wildman, a professor of Theology and Data Sciences at Boston University, spoke about two ongoing global social experiments: a world without belief and a world with AI. He emphasized AI will disrupt social, civic, and political bonds, and expressed hope that the next generation will work to repair, refine, and renew these connections. Following this event, my wife Debbie and I enjoyed a vacation in Maine, a period she has dubbed our "open nester" phase. At the Blue Hill Library, I saw the below sign (from a Christina Baker Kline novel). This quote resonated with me in relation to our approach to AI. We seek guidance from AI experts who offer either utopian or dystopian future. However, if AI is reshaping our understanding of knowledge and relationships, we cannot rely on the preachers of radical tech change to navigate the future path rooted in understanding society. We wouldn't consult social networking app CEOs on how to raise our device-addicted children. Instead of diving deeper into technology's rabbit hole, we should lead 'beyond the algorithm' conversations—ones that focus on evolving from mere consumers of AI to people with greater consciousness of how we can adapt to this complex technology. Let's replace the model of inevitable robotic super-intelligence with one that presupposes agency to enhance human intelligence alongside AI. This moment is an opportunity to deepen our understanding of knowledge & learning. By doing so, we can successfully integrate intelligent machines into our lives while actively working to balance their adverse impacts. ✨Gen X and the AI Revolution: Are We Late to the Party or Ready to Lead? I recently attended #AIFestivus and noticed something surprising: Gen X had a strong presence among the presenters and participants. Generation X has statistically been behind on AI adoption, so this stood out. But maybe it’s not about adopting early— maybe it’s about adopting wisely. Here’s the thing about me and my fellow Gen Xers: we’ve been through it all. From the PC revolution to the rise of the internet and smartphones, we’ve seen the hype cycles. We’ve also seen that not every tech trend lives up to its promise. I know that when I engage with AI, I'm not just experimenting. I'm thinking critically: ✅ Does this solve a real problem? ✅ How does it fit into the bigger picture? ✅ What are the risks and ethical considerations? And here’s where it gets interesting: I think we may actually have an edge. With decades of domain expertise, we’re uniquely positioned to harness AI’s potential. Gen X isn’t just adopting AI; we’re figuring out how to make it work. This feels bigger than just “new tech.” AI today feels like the missing piece of a vision we’ve been chasing since the digital age began—one we dreamed about while watching shows like Star Trek. Natural language interfaces, like Scotty trying to talk to a computer in Star Trek IV, was once a part of a joke. Now, it's becoming closer to a reality. AI is helping us bridge the gap between humans and machines in ways we couldn’t have imagined. But here’s the question we all face: 🖖 Will AI help humanity reach the stars, as Star Trek promised? 🦾 Or will it lead us down a path like SkyNet? The answer depends on us: Technology doesn’t save or destroy us. People do. If we approach AI with responsibility, good ethics, and a focus on solving real problems, it can propel humanity forward. And maybe, just maybe, Gen X can lead the way—combining experience with timing to shape an AI-powered future worth dreaming about. Seeing the 2024 AI Power List reminds me of an uncomfortable reality: The only entertainment figure recognized is from the music industry. As someone who’s witnessed the brilliant, innovative work happening behind the scenes in Hollywood, where creative engineers are doing deep work with machine learning models- I can’t help but feel both proud and disheartened. Proud because I know how much talent we have working tirelessly to make AI work for entertainment. Disheartened, though, because our industry’s absence on this list isn’t due to a lack of innovation but rather a strategic choice to stay out of the AI spotlight. I understand the caution; AI is complex, and its implications are far-reaching. But I can’t help but wonder if by staying silent, we’re missing the opportunity to shape a narrative that matters to both our business and to creatives. Hollywood has always thrived in the spotlight, so maybe it’s time to step back into it- not boast, but instead to lead as we ensure that AI development benefits all sides of our industry, not just one... The real challenge is finding the balance.
