In last year's European Amazon benchmark, 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐟 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 (all from global brand manufacturers) were 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐚 3-𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. We ask this same question in this year's global benchmark. #ECommerce has its specificities in multiple business dimensions and #RGM is one of the most crucial ones. Revenue Growth Management (or Net Revenue Management #NRM) is essential in a competitive market to drive both the top and the bottom line. However, it is still a new activity to the markets outside of #FMCG. The online pure player & #marketplace universe is yet to uncover its underwater obstacles in building a holistic RGM #strategy, so I want to highlight a few. #Price matching Every online player is monitoring its market and is matching the product price according to their pricing strategy. #Amazon is matching the lowest price scraped from a list of strategic competitors on the market. And any B&M player is looking at Amazon prices, as it's a strategic threat. Consequently, your RGM strategy is to cover the full market perimeter or it will not work. #Crossborder sales The above is inflated by cross-border sales. Most of the mature online players in the EU tend to go for neighboring markets to expand their business or attach DACH being the largest. And the easiest play - is to provide lower prices even at the cost of lower margins. Consequently, even a small online player on 1EU level can raise a tsunami of price compression. Here is how it works: CB player lowers prices -> gets matched by a local leader -> gets matched by Amazon -> gets matched by B&M. An enormous challenge for the suppliers as with lower retail margins the annual negotiations become much more aggressive. #Algorythmic approach Mature e-commerce business is based on algorithms and math. There is no category leaders who setups the prices, rather Machine Learning teams who drive commercial strategies execution with focus of balancing the GMV growth and the Profit Margins in the moment. It is essential to understand your #retail partners internal algorithms to build a effective RGM strategy: ▪️What kind of investments do they consider retail margin? ▪️What competitors do they monitor? ▪️What is the main traffic source (and is it price-driven, like Google Shopping)? #Productmix & #promo management Don't plan any promo investments in you contract due to a low-promo strategy? Think again! Every Euro in retailer margin both front and back may fuel price compression. Even your media investments as they tend to replace the pocket paid from and don't bring much incrementality. Consequenty, in order to implement an RGM strategy, your contracts must have a specific promo investment to have a chance of managing what assortment is on promo, and the promo depth. Online channel maturity and importance can't be challenged today. You are online or you are dead. However, I'm surprised by how little expertise of eB2B2C is on the market. The market is still to make its mistakes to learn how to incorporate online retail in strategic transformation projects. Anything to add? Share in the comments!
