Are We on Track to Achieve the SDGs by 2030? In Africa, only 6% of the 32 measurable #SDG targets are on track to be achieved by 2030. Recent assessments by UNDP, African Development Bank Group and UN Economic Commission for Africa reveal that while there’s been modest progress in poverty reduction, multiple crises have slowed our momentum. @UN Recommendations to Accelerate Sustainable Development Goals in Africa The report shows that Africa is on track to reach only less than three of the 32 targets assessed in this report (ASDR-2024) and that setbacks have been recorded for 8 of them, with slow progress or status quo registered for the remaining targets. The continent is also facing an alarming increase in the number of people facing hunger, undernourishment, and stunting. Modest progress in poverty reduction has been offset by multiple crises in recent years, and social protection is inadequate in coverage, fragmented, and largely informal. Comprehensive economic and institutional reforms to enhance efficiency and optimal use of resources are among the report’s recommendations.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and the African Development Bank (AfDB), presented, on the 18th of July, the 2024 Africa Sustainable Development Report (ASDR), at an event held on the margins of the UN High-Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development in New York. Titled ‘Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063 and Eradicating Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises: The Effective Delivery of Sustainable, Resilient and Innovative Solutions’, the report provides an in-depth review of African countries progress towards five sustainable development goals and their 32 targets to meet the 2030 Agenda and the African Union 2063 Agenda. The five SDGs under review are: ending poverty (Goal 1); eliminating hunger (Goal 2); combating climate change (Goal 13); promoting peaceful societies (Goal 16) and strengthening global partnerships (Goal 17). With different initiatives proposed to address these issues, two areas that stood out for me are: 1. Providing innovative financing and strengthening partnerships. 2. Leveraging digital payment platforms What resonates specifically with you and where will you ‘play’? We are in this together. The report is attached below. #SustainableDevelopment #AfricaOnMyMind #CollectiveResponsibility #CollectiveAction

Ms. Aisha Rimi, the ES/CEO of NIPC paid a working visit to Ms. Elsie Attafuah, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programmes (UNDP) earlier today. They deliberated on critical issues and projects aimed at enhancing the relationship between the organizations and shared ideas for the purpose of improving the investment climate in Nigeria, with a need for the alignment of the UNDP programmes in Nigeria with the 8-Point Economic Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, as this will fast track the achievements of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. #NIPC #UNDP #NigeriaInvestment #EconomicGrowth #SustainableDevelopment #FoodSecurity #JobCreation #EmpoweringYouth #WomenEmpowerment #DigitalTransformation #PartnershipForChange #UN2030Agenda #PrivateSectorDevelopment #GoodGovernance #Nigeria2030 #BolaAhmedTinubu #InvestmentClimate

And so the curtain is drawn on a wonderful week of engagement with UN leaders on Africas sustainable development #AFRSD The Draft Addis Ababa declaration on the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions to reinforce the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063 and to eradicate poverty in times of multiple crises highlights among other things the need: (i) To ensure the timely reform of the global financial institutions and architecture to make them fit for purpose and able to serve the interests of Africa and developing countries elsewhere in the world; (ii) To ensure the existence of global financing mechanisms that give African and other developing countries access to adequate and equitable concessional financing and to affordable market-based resources to accelerate sustainable development; (iii) To advance the efforts of the Secretary-General to close the Sustainable Development Goal financing gap through his proposed Sustainable Development Goal stimulus. The 2024 Africa Sustainable Development Report is out! I had the honour of working with colleagues from AU, ECA and AfDB on this critical analysis of Africa’s progress on 5 key Global Goals: SDG 1, SDG 2, SDG 13, SDG 16, SDG 17. Some African countries have made great strides in fighting corruption, developing social security safety nets, preventing sexual and gender-based violence against women. But challenges remain & to support African governments getting back on track towards Agenda 2030 & Agenda 2063, we need to step up & facilitate: 🔸 concessionary development financing 🔸 enhanced partnerships 🔸 strengthened disaster risk prevention 🔸support anti-corruption efforts 🔸 promote critical economic reforms

Reflection: From Government to Governance for effective SDG implementation in Africa: Paradox of First things First. Traditionally, governments always make a mistake of presumption, by believing that it knew what was best for the people. Funds and international deals were clinched on this regard, but this social experiment has proved wrong in areas of socioeconomic development as most African countries continue to experience higher poverty rates, high inequalities, and many socioeconomic imbalances... This justifies the adoption of the new trend of moving from "government to governance" Governance is collective effort of consultant action among key stakeholders in the matters of resource mobilization, and strategic implementation for sustainable results.- Meeting both the needs for the present and the future. unless this concept is embraced with maximum urgency by Governments, issues of attaining SDGs in Africa would be a mere myth... From 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to African Union Agenda 2063, the importance of industrialization has been recognized for African countries in economic growth, technology innovation, poverty eradication and employment creation. As we observe the Africa Industrialization Day today, and in light of the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa (2016-2025) proclaimed by the General Assembly in 2016, I encourage the international community to actively support the industrialization in Africa, and to firmly anchor the African continent on a path towards inclusive and sustainable industrial development.
