Effective communication between patients and medical professionals can be a daunting task albeit, an achievable one. To seamlessly achieve effective communication with our patients we must have P.E.F 📌 Patience Most times you might find patients doing the exact opposite of a clear instruction given to them, always understand they have alot running through their mind. Trust me they are not out to get you. Just be patient with them 📌 Empathy In order to understand your patient and communicate effectively with them, it's important you see things from their perspective. As a professional, this would entail "putting on their shoes" to see where it hurts.... I can hear you say "that's too many shoes to try on" 📌 Four Ears For communication to be effective, you should listen twice as much as you speak. In a hospital, we strive to balance patient care with respect for everyone’s time. Recently, a patient arrived 20 minutes late to an 11:40 am appointment, and the doctor offered to see her at 14:00. She reluctantly waited but was upset about the delay and voiced her frustration. This situation raises a key question: Where do we draw the line between accommodating patient complaints and dismissing those that are unreasonable? While we must be very mindful of patients’ concerns, it’s also crucial to set boundaries and ensure mutual respect.
