What are Dental Veneers? Dental Veneers are thin, custom-made shells of tooth-coloured materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their colour, shape, size, or length. In dentistry, Veneer is a layer of material placed over a tooth. Veneers can improve the aesthetics of a smile and protect the tooth's surface from damage. There are two main types of material used to fabricate a veneer: composite and dental porcelain. A composite veneer may be directly placed (built-up in the mouth), or indirectly fabricated by a dental technician in a dental lab, and later bonded to the tooth, typically using resin cement. The amount we prepare a tooth for a crown has changed considerably over the past decade or so. When i was a post grad we mainly did PFM crowns, for which much more reduction was required than we do today for E max crowns. The finish line lines have also changed from a shoulder to a chamfer even for PFM crowns. In E max crowns I do 1.5 mm on the occlusal surface and 0.5mm chamfer all around. I do not do the vertiprep as I like a finishline , which is easier for the technicians to work on also. I also do not like intracrevicular preps ( Subgingival is a wrong terminology). Also just because we practice adhesive dentistry does not mean that we forget the principles of tooth preparation. They are as relevant now as they were before. Finally I do most of my preps with just one type of bur, the torpedo dimond of various diameters and lengths . I will put up a picture of the burs in my next post. Having tried different methods of gingival retraction , I still find knitted chord with Astringent to be the best for this.
