The fight for social justice was prominent in 1980s America and activists fought against and spread awareness about AIDS, encouraged acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals, continued civil and women’s rights efforts, brought the crack cocaine epidemic to light, and more. In Los Angeles, the combination of rising property value and rising unemployment made many communities particularly vulnerable. Despite an influx of immigration and diversity, many individuals from these groups were unable to vote, causing social and political strains. These issues set the context for Bet Tzedek’s work during the decade of the ‘80s. With increasing, well coordinated anti-gender and anti-rights attacks, it is understandable to get outraged when any piece of law, human rights mechanism or policy protecting our rights is under attack. Recently, the Bill to repeal the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (2015) passed its second reading and there have been a lot of outrage from the feminist and LGBTQI+ movements, because this is one of the most progressive laws we have against diverse forms of SGBV in Nigeria. But then, have we taken time to adequately review the changes in the proposed Bill to replace the VAPP Act? It is important to know what has changed in the proposed Bill, what makes it different from the VAPP Act, what these differences will affect and use this knowledge for more informed policy advocacy. Our colleagues at OBODO have graciously written up an analysis of the differences between the VAPP Act and the proposed Bill. Kindly read below 👇 https://lnkd.in/dYZe4eY2 A lot of work from the feminist movement, gender equality CSOs, LGBTQI+ organizations and other stakeholders went into the creation, push for adoption of the VAPP Act for many years. Hence, as opposed to a repeal, the most proactive measure would’ve been an amendment of the law to cover gaps like the clarification of punishment for rape offences under the law, provision for offences of attempting or conspiring to commit rape, as well as inciting, aiding, abetting, or counselling the commission of rape and other identified gaps for more protection against violence. We have released findings based on the first phase of its research on 'anti-gender' politics in Europe. Our research reveals how transgender rights, feminism, and LGBTIQ+ advocacy are systematically attacked in politics and media. From late 2022 to the end of 2023, we mapped how ‘anti-gender’ politics are produced and expressed in contemporary Europe. We analysed hundreds of parliamentary debates and thousands of media articles in four case studies focusing on the UK, Poland, Switzerland, and Hungary, as well as the European Parliament, between 2016 and 2022. https://lnkd.in/eueDBvD2

Another victim of the well funded and well-oiled machinery of the anti-LGBTQ movement? "Yet, as much as these statements of solidarity from the international community are appreciated and do play a role in drawing attention to the plight of LGBTQI Africans, they fall short. The movement needs more—much more. It requires tangible, substantial resources to make a meaningful impact." Inequalities within society make people vulnerable and these vulnerabilities and their negative and disastrous impacts are exacerbated after disasters and crises. Philanthropy has a role to play in addressing the root causes of inequities within societies and supporting movements that fight for justice and equity can have outsized impacts both in peacetime and when disasters or crises strike.

Truth bomb : We've seen it coming. The support for African LGBTQI rights vs. the funds pouring into anti-gender and fundamentalist movements? The difference is jaw-dropping. The disparity in funding between African LGBTQI rights initiatives and the well-oiled machinery of anti-gender movements and Christian fundamentalist groups is not just significant—it's staggering for every dollar LGBTQI rights initiatives get, anti-rights groups get $20. This isn't a gap; it's a chasm. The progress witnessed so far across the continent has been hard-won by the blood, sweat, and tears of activists within Africa. These tireless warriors have forged paths where there were none, challenged oppressive laws, and provided a beacon of hope for countless individuals living in fear and secrecy. Their endeavors, often conducted under threat of violence and persecution, are nothing short of heroic. Yet, as much as these statements of solidarity from the international community are appreciated and do play a role in drawing attention to the plight of LGBTQI Africans, they fall short. The movement needs more—much more. It requires tangible, substantial resources to make a meaningful impact. Financial support, educational resources, legal assistance, and protective services for activists on the front lines are desperately needed to sustain and grow the movement!
