Love the question that the Principal asks, "What can we do to help you?" I observed a 3rd grade mainstream school classroom where a child had some mental disability. His classmates were confused about his condition. They commented, "He is like this only! Let him be.", "He has a broken brain that is why he behaves like this." , "He has a fracture in mind. He can't do normal things." , "We dont understand him, we just tell him to be in his place." I wonder how would this class be if the teacher could talk to children about his condition, ask him how could he feel supported by atleast making him feel safe in the space. He was a bright child only to be labeled with broken mind by peers who wanted to understand him but were only hearing the labels! We are reading the book 'The Inclusion Toolbox' in Learning Pioneers community. This book is quite helpful in understanding what is inclusion and providing some strategies to make school an inclusive space.
