🌍 Important update for the construction industry: CALGreen takes effect July 1, 2024! 🇺🇸 The construction industry has long been a significant contributor to global carbon emissions. While we’ve made impressive progress in reducing operational carbon — the emissions produced during a building's use phase — embodied carbon, which includes the emissions from manufacturing and transporting construction materials, is now receiving the attention it deserves. To tackle this pressing issue, California has updated CALGreen, the first mandatory green building standards code in the United States. These new requirements, set to take effect on July 1, 2024, aim to significantly reduce the environmental impact of buildings by focusing on embodied carbon. As we approach this important deadline, it's crucial for all stakeholders in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry to familiarize themselves with these changes and prepare for compliance. Seth Strongin, building decarbonization planning director, will be participating as a panelist at an upcoming AIA Los Angeles event on August 8th titled, “Advancing Decarbonization: Embodied Carbon Reductions Enter California Building Code,” held at the AIA Los Angeles HQ.   A pioneering update to California’s building code will require reductions in Embodied Carbon for commercial building projects. Seth will join a panel of experts to discuss the implications, strategies, opportunities and tools required to advance embodied carbon reduction, relative to the CALGreen code update.   The reduction of embodied carbon is a critical component to advancing a net zero future for the built environment. On July 1st, 2024, California became the first U.S. jurisdiction to mandate the disclosure and reduction of embodied carbon for commercial building projects in its building code.   In addition, the CALGreen update will introduce three compliance paths for reducing embodied carbon in commercial construction. The panel will present work and experiences from a range of experts in embodied carbon and decarbonization considerations in architectural project delivery.
