I get asked almost every single day why Pickleball is so popular. Investors, journalists, potential franchisees, my friends and family... Everyone’s trying to understand why this sport with a goofy name played by retirees is suddenly the hottest thing in the country. The hype truly is real. Just a few weeks ago, I saw 30+ people waiting to play at their local courts before they went to work. Four courts, packed, with a line of enthusiastic players ready to jump in at a moment's notice. For me, the appeal is pretty simple: — It's the thrill of friendly competition — The satisfaction of mastering new skills — The joy of sharing your passion with others Pickleball is competitive - many of us lost the thrill of athletic competition out of high school. It’s very easy to learn - unlike tennis, the average person can get a rally going in a few minutes. The community - you can’t play it alone. You’re forced to be social and that’s good for the soul. But what people are *really* asking when they ask about the appeal is: → Will Pickleball’s popularity stick? I think it absolutely will. It speaks to a variety of needs. It’s a unique combination of exercise, camaraderie, and simple fun that appeals to people of all ages. In an increasingly isolated, digital world with simmering issues across generations, we NEED sports like Pickleball. And I’m seeing firsthand, when you pick up a paddle for the first time, you become a pickler in no time! — So what is it about #Pickleball that makes it so addictive? Shop Floor Comradery One of the things I miss most about regularly working in a plant is the comradery with those in the shops of past employers. The days passed more quickly because we had fun ribbing one another about things happening in the plant and during outside company activities. One example was a friend who played right field on the shop softball team. For those of you who do not know, that is generally the position assigned to the least talented player on the team. Most batters at that level are right-handed hitters, so most hits to the outfield go to left or center field. One evening, while playing, Kevin was patrolling right field for us. The batter hit a fly ball toward him. As Kevin positioned himself under the ball, it passed the end of his glove and hit the top of his head. The following day, one of our coworkers taped a softball on the top of his hard hat so that everyone could ask why. Kevin earned the Golden Boot Award, a nasty old rubber boot spray-painted gold. Everyone enjoyed the good-natured ribbing, including Kevin. It was one of many such stories where everyone was, at one time or another, the center of attention.
