In the heart of the Scottish Highlands, a historic 15,000-acre estate has been purchased for an ambitious rewilding project, marking a pivotal moment for environmental conservation and climate action. This is only the third time the estate has changed hands in nearly 300 years—a testament to its historical and ecological significance. The estate’s transformation will embrace rewilding principles, aiming to restore its ecosystem to a natural, uncultivated state. By reintroducing native plant and animal species, the project hopes to revitalize biodiversity while addressing global challenges like climate change. Rewilding is not only about environmental restoration; it serves as a dual-purpose initiative, generating crucial economic benefits such as carbon sequestration and improved water regulation. A particularly innovative aspect of this project is its integration with the growing market for carbon credits. By restoring forests and ecosystems, the estate will generate carbon credits—valuable assets as industries strive toward net-zero emissions. This creates a unique opportunity to pair environmental stewardship with long-term economic sustainability. The revenue from carbon credits will play a critical role in financing the rewilding process and ensuring its scalability. This shift in land usage underscores an evolving mindset. Once viewed as symbols of aristocracy or sites for recreational pursuits, estates like this are now pivotal in tackling pressing environmental challenges. The project also draws inspiration from "Hay’s Way," a sustainable land management approach balancing ecological restoration with human activity—a potential model for sustainable projects worldwide. Of course, challenges remain. Community engagement will be crucial to ensure that local residents benefit from the project without fearing disruptions to farming, hunting, or other traditional practices. Additionally, meeting stringent international standards for carbon credit certification will be essential. What’s happening in the Scottish Highlands represents much more than a local project. It’s a bold experiment in harmonizing conservation, commerce, and community interests, with lessons that could echo far beyond Scotland. As climate change reshapes how we value and utilize land, this initiative stands as a beacon of hope—a telling example of how historical landscapes can forge a sustainable future. People are not stupid. The capture of EU political decision making by corporate lobbies is not a secret. Over the last 20 years, I cant recall how many people Ive spoken to who get involved in campaigns they care about in Europe - on climate action, on restoring nature, on banning deep sea mining, on ending violence against women, or dreams like making a universal basic income possible or treating people from the Global South as equals. Then I hear those same people talk of their sadness and anger when their campaigns dont win because the democratic system is rigged against them. Because the corporate lobby has just about all the access to the power players in EU decision making. The result of all that? The same people who are quite up for a bit of civic engagement disengage. Or worse, they get hit with the eurosceptic bug. EU leaders should do everything to stop the #euroscepticism creep. But it is growing in those who no longer have faith in a system that benefits rich corporations, whilst turning up the heat on citizens movements and NGOs, like the proverbial slowly boiled frog. And things are getting hot right now. Environmental organisations like Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe and the ones below collectively represent and engage consistently with fifty million Europeans. Their ability to engage people in the shaping and living of EU policies is now under massive threat by a really hairbrain idea that would mean they cant use funding for activities to engage in EU decision making. Now that would be an own goal a l'Europeene. I really hope that Ursula von der Leyen and co read this letter and listen to people powered organisations driven by the objective of preserving the planet for our children and their children, and for the planet. I hope she actually meets them as apparently she is due to do soon. Because again, that did not happen in the entire last mandate. If ever there was an indicator of a power imbalance...We are better than this - give #democracy a chance. #hope #greendeal #lifeprogramme #europe

Key words: #SDGs #ESGs #cities #indicators #governance A new ESG #ISO standard for cities has just been published: ISO 37125:2024, Sustainable cities and communities — Environmental, social and governance (ESG) indicators for cities. The new standard sets up an ESG framework cutting across and integrating previous relevant ISO standards (ISO 37120: Sustainable Cities and Communities; ISO 37122: Smart Cities; and ISO 37123: Resilient Cities), with the aim of supporting city leaders worldwide to deliver ESG-informed/ driven municipal policy formulation, planning and implementation. The standard may be able to offer a much needed framework for standardised criteria that underpin monitoring and comparison of city performance towards sustainable transformation(s). The standard is not publicly available (needs to be purchased!), however, from a quick look at its contents and introductory text, a number of caveats/ questions remain: 1. Is this a step forward towards data-driven city management for 'sound' governance into more sustainable futures? We are all aware of the pitfalls of data-driven city governance (i.e. lack/representation of data; ethics and justice issues; variety and lack of integration among city governance frameworks within and across cities etc) - will this mitigate against some of that? How, when etc? 2. It is not clear to me how the standard aligns with SDG11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). I've had a quick look at greenery/greenspace indicators and six (6) indicators are listed: green roofs; natural protection areas; tree canopy; ecosystem restoration; urban agriculture; and green area owned/ operated by the city. This compares with one SDG11 target dedicated to green space (SDG11.7 - universal access to safe, inclusive and accessible, green and public spaces) measured by two indicators: proportion of city area dedicated to open space for public use + number of harassment victims. Or perhaps the standard does not aim to align with SDG11, if so, why' sustainable cities and communities'? 3. It seems to me that the standard speaks mainly to public administration/ sector, despite its claims to target both public and private sector city-relevant organisations/ institutions. Hence, it seems to engage little with (ignore?) the myriad of ESG frameworks already existing and mushrooming in the private sector, including the Carbon Disclosure Project, Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark, Global Reporting Initiative, Integrated Reporting and Principle for Responsible Investment, to name a few. 4. Finally, how is the standard aligning with the just published (July 2024) European Directive for Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence which requires due diligence reporting cognate to ESG reporting?
