The typical day for first year teachers has its ups and downs. Having the experience of feeling like riding a roller coaster for 180 days. In order to retain new teachers, they need and deserve the following: 1. Qualtiy mentoring 2. Ongoing professional development 3. Scheduled opportunities to collaborate and observe other teachers 4. Principal support Although, we may know what new teachers need. As the school year approaches, I wish all my friends and acquaintances in education an easy year. Being an educator is tough--the content is easy, the procedures are easy, but navigating the emotional minefield of managing the behavior of many young people simultaneously is hard. Encourage your young people to be honest, ask "why/how" questions, and put their doggone devices away. Disliking class materials or even classroom teachers isn't a good reason to avoid learning--tough people and tough lessons exist throughout life, and sometimes we learn the most in those situations! Lastly, recall that manners are for everyone and every occasion--politeness helps all ages glide through uncomfortable situations. They communicate basic respect and allow us to get our ideas across without prejudice. You have been warned! Kindergarten and first grade teachers are very protective of their students. It is not wise to walk into the classroom complaining about the results of their students Reading benchmark data because the lethal stares will follow. She is silently thinking… “Could you teach a class of five, and six year old students how to read everyday?” The best approach is to enter the classrooms verbalizing the data commendations, first. Then share recommendations on how you will provide “support” to them, and the students to improve areas of weakness. Now that school is over or almost over its time to ask some tough questions. Does the school fit your child? More specifically, does the educational philosophy align with how your child is wired? Every school has an education philosophy even if it isn't specifically mentioned. The traditional educational model is teacher and subject centered. The teacher lectures and guides the classroom in their particular style. The curriculum is formulaic and structured. Students are expected to adjust their learning style to the teacher for the most part. Classroom size tends to be large. Non-traditional educational models include Montessori and Sudbury. These models are student centered. The teacher adjusts his/her lessons based on the student's pace and interests. Classroom size tends to be smaller than traditional schools. Questions to asks: - Does my child thrive in a structured environment or less structured? - Is my child able to keep pace with the class or could he/she benefit from more direct engagement? - Does my child have specialized gifts or interests that could be better supported at a non-traditional school? - Can I afford the tuition at a non-traditional school? These questions may reveal that there is a disconnect between your child and your child's school. If so, now is the time to explore other schools that could be a better fit. As educators, we spend an enormous amount of time on lesson planning and the deconstruction of reading standards to meet the instructional needs of our students. But- “What about the emotional needs and environment?” Our students need to be in an environment that promotes both academic success and emotional wellbeing. Students that have positive relationships with their teachers and adults at school, often feel safe and secure which allows them to learn and develop. We know from experience that students will often search for a sense of connection with the people they know, and since students spend a large amount of time at school, it is imperative that the learning environment cultivates a sense of belonging for ALL students.
