I started thinking about this in the plane on my way to the RSA Conference this morning. RSA? Tony – Why, oh why do you go there??? It’s a buzzword tsunami, a cyber carnival sales-fest, the Super-Bass-o-Matic of cyber trade shows, a noisy and exhausting forced-march thru too many talks, booths, and social events. Yes, it’s all that and more. And I really enjoy it. At RSA I’ve been inspired, informed - and often amused. I’ve connected ideas and people, found new partners, made new friends, caught up with old friends, and celebrated friends who are no longer with us. I first attended RSA in 2003. To keep from being overwhelmed by the trade show, I focused on visiting every vendor I could find that was working on tools to measure compliance with things like NSA Security Guides, DISA STIGS, CIS Benchmarks, etc. Those discussions became the roots of the Security Automation movement of the early-mid 2000’s thru 2012-ish. For the next several years, that week in San Francisco became my primary meeting place with industry and government friends. With government friends, there was the inevitable joke about how we had to cross the entire country just to make time to sit down and have a cup of coffee together. In 2012, many of us from NSA delayed our trip to RSA to attend the funeral of the late Paul Bartock. Dear friends at NIST hosted a celebration of his life later that week at RSA, a tradition that still continues. https://lnkd.in/eQ6Tbwkc After retirement from NSA, in 2014 I gave a talk, “The Fog of More: A Cybersecurity Community Challenge”. It might sound silly, but I’ve gotten more feedback, echoes, and follow-up from that talk than anything else I have ever done. https://lnkd.in/exGFPfzF In 2015 or 16, after Wyatt Starnes (TripWire, SignaCert) passed away, a small group of gathered at the Samovar Tea House - the last place I had spoken with Wyatt - to toast his life and contributions to our industry. In 2020, conversations with numerous folks jump-started the CIS work with small managed service providers. There were SO many more events and career milestones, memories made during that week. So even though RSA is noisy, nutty, and exhausting.... “Yeah, I’m thinking I’m back!” - John Wick --tony Center for Internet Security

"When I founded Kev Cook Security Limited, it was just me and a vision. No investors, no big contracts—just the determination to make something out of nothing. I started in the trenches, taking on any job I could, whether it was securing local pubs or working at gigs. Bit by bit, I built trust, formed connections, and proved that we could handle the big assignments too. What drives me is more than just providing security. It's about creating opportunities for people in my community, especially those who, like me, faced challenges. I know what it’s like to feel like the odds are against you. That’s why I’m proud that Kev Cook Security has become a business that not only protects but empowers others, helping them gain their SIA badges and find steady employment. Today, we’re working on major events, festivals, and even community street warden programs. The future is bright, and I know this is just the beginning. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you don’t need to have it all to start—just a vision, determination, and the will to succeed.
