The European Council has given the final green light to the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act), the world's first comprehensive AI law. This groundbreaking legislation follows a ‘risk-based’ approach, ensuring that the higher the risk to society, the stricter the rules. ⚖🤖 The AI Act aims to: ✅ foster the development of safe and trustworthy AI systems across the EU ✅ ensure the respect of fundamental rights for all EU citizens ✅ stimulate investment and innovation in AI within Europe Key points of the AI Act: ➡ High-Risk AI Systems: Stricter regulations for AI systems that pose significant risks, while systems with limited risk face lighter obligations. ➡ Prohibited AI Practices: Bans on AI for cognitive behavioral manipulation, social scoring, and predictive policing based on profiling. ➡ General Purpose AI Models: Requirements vary based on the systemic risks posed. ➡ Governance and Enforcement: Establishment of an AI Office, a scientific panel, an AI Board, and an advisory forum to ensure proper enforcement and compliance. ➡ Transparency: Increased transparency for high-risk AI systems, including mandatory registration in the EU database and informing individuals about emotion recognition systems. With these regulations, Europe sets a global standard for trust, transparency, and accountability in AI, ensuring this transformative technology can thrive while protecting fundamental rights. 🌍🔒 #AI #AIAct #DataProtection #EU

The EU AI Act: Paving the Way for Responsible AI 🤖 As the world hurtles toward an AI-driven future, the European Union has taken a groundbreaking step by introducing the EU Artificial Intelligence Act. 🚀 🔍 What is the EU AI Act? The AI Act is a proposed European law that defines the levels of risk associated with the impact of various artificial intelligence systems on people’s lives and fundamental rights. From work to health and safety, this legislation aims to strike a delicate balance between innovation and safeguarding citizens’ rights. 🌐 🌐 Global Standard Setter Being the first comprehensive law on AI by a major regulator anywhere, the EU AI Act can set a global standard for AI regulation in other jurisdictions. Just as the GDPR revolutionized data privacy, this act promotes the European approach to tech regulation on the world stage. 🌍 📊 Risk-Based Approach The AI Act categorizes applications of AI into three risk levels. The higher the risk posed by an AI system, the stricter the rules governing its development, market placement, and use. It’s a risk-based approach that ensures safety and trustworthiness while fostering innovation. 🛡️ 🌐 Key Elements of the Provisional Agreement Rules on high-impact general-purpose AI models that could cause systemic risk. A revised system of governance with enforcement powers at the EU level. An extended list of prohibitions, including the use of remote biometric identification by law enforcement authorities in public spaces (subject to safeguards). Enhanced protection of fundamental rights through mandatory impact assessments for deployers of high-risk AI systems. 📝 🎉 A Historical Achievement Today, we celebrate a milestone toward the future! The EU AI Act addresses a global challenge in our fast-evolving technological landscape. It’s about boosting innovation, respecting rights, and shaping a responsible AI ecosystem. 🌈 🙌 Let’s champion AI that benefits humanity while upholding our values. Towards a global constituent assembly for AI and digital communications
5moUnfortunately the aims have been largely missed, as they were by the Council of Europe treaty on AI. We need a strong global treaty that can true tackle the challenges. We are giving it a shot with the Harnessing AI Initiative and events we are holding at the G7 and then in Geneva in November.
